Episode 18 — “The End of a Scary Dream”
The Goddess Café Terrace Bathos Melodrama Meter
Did you consider the odds that a story from Kouji Seo would tackle a Japanese social issue with a sober eye? Japan’s aging population and negative reproductive replacement rate combine for a cultural, economic, and technological upheaval within a generation. How does Goddess Café Terrace handle such a weighty topic? By scaring an elderly lady with cognitive issues with scary masks, curing a degenerative disease through dream magic and mistaken identity, and headbutting an octogenarian in the gut. What? An anticlimactic resolution to an overly dramatic scene? Why, that would be “bathos,” wouldn’t it? Yes. Yes, it would.
Ami’s grandmother is the second one who confused Hayato with his grandfather, Masahiro. Both Ouka’s and Ami’s grandmothers left the coffee shop and later expressed relief and joy after they heard that Masahiro had married Sachiko. And last year, Akane’s mother hinted at knowing about Hayato’s family history. I’m sure we’ll eventually meet the other grandmothers. Goddess Café Terrace continues building a narrative structure for cross-generational rhyming. Exploring those connections is a fun source of drama that the anime can convert to bathos.
Protecting the Nest Points
Ririka feeds Sachiko Kitty and receives yuri massages from Mao in thanks. Ririka’s efforts don’t affect Hayato’s opinion directly, but she’s part of his growing economic neighborhood empire.
Grandma’s Little Girl Points in Goddess Café Terrace
Ami, obviously. Even Hayato called her “grandma’s little girl.” She rewarded “Hayacchi” with the height of elegance of squeezing hefty boobs under a starry sky. Very elegant!
Baka Charm Points
Ami aimed all her baka nature at her grandmother, meaning she received no points. The winner? Akane! She built up her scaredy-cat cred by freaking out at everything in the rundown ryokan.
The Drunk Girl of Goddess Café Terrace Points
Shiragiku retains her crown as queen of the drunk girl points. Mao scored a few points for getting horny and relieving her urges through sapphic groping.
Cool Charm Points
Ouka won because she didn’t score any negative points. Nobody acted “cool” in this episode.
Goddess Café Terrace Makes Me Go Heh.
Ami regained her appetite after deciding to visit her grandmother. Heroes of Justice need to keep their fuel tanks topped up! Ami has entirely too much energy for a senior care facility. So loud! Aw. Grandma Katsuyo has dead eyes, so Ami’s comedic attempts to jog her memory create a disappointing scene.
Time for Hayato’s dream magic. I guess. Private Tatsuta will fulfill her orders, Boss! Grandma Katsuyo remembers Masahiro but expresses happiness that he married Sachiko. And Ami woke up from a scary dream.
Now, everything’s better, and Goddess Café Terrace can pop out the jokes. Haha! Eri-nee-chan used to be a Yankee delinquent. No jackhammering an old lady’s gut!
Start of a Hot Spring Nightmare
Ami needs to stay with Grandma Katsuyo while her doctors perform cognitive tests, so Hayato booked a ryokan to spend one more night. Uh oh. This old-fashioned traditional inn might be too old-fashioned. Hahaha! And, aw. Akane’s fear of ghosts and haunted houses will generate laughs alongside the steamy fanservice for Goddess Café Terrace. The inn only has a mixed bath, so Akane will make the best of it.
The hot water harem hijinks heat up! Riho and Shiragiku put their intentions out in the open. Ouka hasn’t entered the hot spring Olympics yet. I sense shenanigans — Eri-nee-chan called to let Hayato know Ami would stay with her overnight.
Akane can barely enjoy her meal with all the haunted house decorations. I love her pout. Uh oh. Ouka hates bugs. I’ll file that away for future jokes in Goddess Café Terrace. Uh oh. Drunk Shiragiku busts out! How? Oh no. The wild boar hot pot used sake to cut the meat’s gamy taste. Shiragiku is in the mood for Hayato’s sushi roll! Oho. The other girls do not offer hefty meat side dishes for Shiragiku. Mao operates her own night maneuvers against Ririka at the Familia homestead.
The Oppai Starry Night and Ryokan Classiness
I knew it. Ami beat out the other girls and joined Hayato in the mixed bath. Our reward is Hayato’s reward. Grandma Katsuyo had a misdiagnosis, but what kind of cognitive illness produces memory problems but resolves them through corrective surgery? Meh, it’s a Kouji Seo story, so don’t think about it too hard. Ha! Goddess Café Terrace has employed steamy censorship all season. But it brought back the laser light show for Ami’s sharp tips. How will Ami thank Hayato for helping her grandmother? Hefty, elegant fondling under the starry sky! The height of elegance, Hayacchi! She’s only second to Shiragiku in bust size, after all. Ami is still asexual with Hayato, but she raced ahead of her harem competitors.
That could change because the night is still young! Riho and Akane compete directly with a drunk wildcard in Shiragiku. Ouka has concerns. Next time, Goddess Café Terrace answers the question about who gets the most sleep in a haunted inn. Hint: it’s not Hayato. Oh! And the Chiyoda Diner group handles girthy mushrooms.
The Café Terrace and its Goddesses streams on Crunchyroll in Japanese audio and multiple language subtitles.
