Can you believe that Hatsune Miku, the virtual singer popularized by aspiring DJs, hasn’t received her own movie or anime series until now? First released all the way back in August 2007, the iconic character (along with her sibling singers) has become associated with an entire genre of electronic music and amassed plenty of gorgeous merchandise along the way.
Hatsune Miku is finally heading to the silver screen with Project SEKAI the Movie: Kowareta SEKAI to Utaenai MIKU (released internationally as COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing). It’s based on the mobile rhythm game Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE!, another spin-off from the Project DIVA series of games. While the film arrived in Japan in January, it started its global release, with GKIDS bringing the movie to North American theaters on April 17.
To celebrate Hatsune Miku’s theatrical debut, we’re looking at one of the best aspects of the Hatsune Miku fandom — the incredible cosplays that her dedicated fans put together at anime conventions and musical exhibitions around the globe!
Best Racing Miku Cosplays
One of the most iconic outfits for Hatsune Miku is her yearly “racing” costume. Starting in 2008, only a year after her release, the racing outfit became part of the Hatsune Miku GT Project, an actual racing team participating in the Japanese SUPER GT GT300 circuit. We love how these models embody the 2023 Racing Miku design, and if you do too, check out our Hatsune Miku GT Project Racing Miku: 2023 Ver. 1/7 Figure!

The Cutest Hatsune Miku Cosplays
When you think about it, Hatsune Miku is almost like a dress-up doll for the Vocaloid community, with yearly seasonal outfits, anniversary costumes, and unique designs for Miku based on popular songs, such as Deco*27’s Vampire and Rabbit Hole. One thing is for sure: She’s a bona fide idol in her own right, and the Hatsune Miku real-life concerts blur the line between digital and reality — Miku even has an orchestral symphony!

COLORFUL STAGE! Cosplays
We’re here to talk about the theatrical release of Project SEKAI the Movie, so let’s look at some inspired cosplay from COLORFUL STAGE! game. CyberAgent and Sega created twenty original characters for the mobile game and split them into five themed idol groups. You can play through the game’s storyline, following each unit on their individual and group journeys through music, or form your own band of characters pulled from the “gacha” banners. The new characters all have unique charms worthy of being alongside Miku herself!

Classic Version Hatsune Miku Cosplay
Sometimes, there’s just no substitute for a classic look. And Hatsune Miku’s standard outfit has stood the test of time, still looking just as futuristic now as it did back in 2007. We’re so excited to see all the cosplays, new and old, as COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing continues its global release.
