The Spring 2023 season’s coming up, are you wondering what shows to check out? One anime of note is Otonari ni Ginga, or A Galaxy Next Door. From the looks of it, this slice-of-life romp about living with a princess could have a lot going for it.

An adaptation of a popular seinen manga by female artist Gido Amagakure, creator of Sweetness and Lightning (2013-18), A Galaxy Next Door follows a struggling mangaka named Ichirou Kuga (Taku Yashiro) as he tries to make ends meet to provide for his younger siblings. One day, a beautiful woman calling herself Shiori Goshiki (Yuu Wakui) applies to be his assistant. She proves to be scarily competent at her job and is pleasant company outside of work. There’s just something off about her that Ichirou can’t quite pin down though. Things get even weirder when, all of a sudden, Shiori declares that they’re engaged to marry. It turns out that, in reality, she’s a princess from the stars.
If this sounds like a modern take on Ah, My Goddess!, there’s more to it than that. Aside from having a working-age male protagonist and shoujo-esque character designs, the source material combines the mundane if not melancholy realities of everyday life with the stellar warmth exuded by Shiori, without her being overbearing. The art style’s grounded yet soft stylings — which according to Photography Director Ryo Kujirai (various Pokémon films) was painstakingly preserved for the anime — result in a subdued romance that’s both fantastical and relatable.

A Galaxy Next Door is helmed by Ryuichi Kimura (of Kemono Friends 2 and Aikatsu! fame) and screenwriter Gigaemon Ichikawa, with long-time mainstay Asahi Production behind them. While the voice cast is largely made of relative newcomers, Taku Yashiro has made a name for himself in the industry since being named Best Rookie Voice Actor in the 12th Seiyu Awards in 2018, while Yuu Wakui has come a long way since her main debut in Aikatsu! Even if it’s still too early to say whether it’ll be good, with such competent and talented hands on deck, this anime already shows a lot of potential.

The show is set to premiere in Japan on April 8th, 2023. Crunchyroll announced that it will stream the anime outside Asia, so you’ll soon be able to see A Galaxy Next Door too, without traveling to a galaxy far, far away.
