A recent announcement for the boy’s love (BL) anime adaptation of Sasaki and Miyano, which was originally slated for release this year, noted that the release would be delayed until early next year. The announcement was made at a small press event with the original manga author and stated that Sasaki and Miyano will begin airing in Japan this coming January!
Until now, Sasaki and Miyano have been a bit of a quiet project since its anime announcement, initially with no information if it’d be a TV series or a direct-to-DVD OVA. However, looking at the trailer, the TV series looks to be something with a lot of care and craftsmanships behind it. Character design and art direction are faithful to the original manga, and the tone is played up to give a soft, relaxing vibe — perfect for the premise.
A high school slice of life, Sasaki and Miyano plays and makes fun of a lot of tropes in boy’s love manga with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor in being self-aware of what it is. The story follows Miyano, who is an openly gay younger classman at an all-boys high school and a self-proclaimed expert of BL manga. He’s shy, timid, and insecure about his notably feminine physical appearance. Then all of that changes when he draws the attention of his senpai, Sasaki.
Cool, confident, a bit stupid, and a social butterfly, Sasaki takes a liking to Miyano quickly, and asks him to let him borrow whatever manga he’s been reading. Miyano, wanting to shake Sasaki off of him, decides to throw the latest BL manga he has been reading, only for Sasaki to return it with a smile on his face and demand Miyano loan him the next volume. The more books Miyano loans to Sasaki, the more time they spend together between classes to discuss the books, and a gentle romance begins to blossom. Despite how many manga they read, Miyano and Sasaki aren’t able to understand that their own BL story is unfolding through every page.
Sasaki and Miyano will begin in January 2022. For more information, head on over to our review of the first volume of the manga or check out the TV anime’s official website!
