ComicCon Africa, the first for the continent, ran September 14th to 16th. The event, held in Kyalami, just outside Johannesburg, South Africa, showcased top local cosplay talent. Here are some highlights from the Twittersphere.
@Avocado_Eater as Rey from Star Wars.
Noelle Adams at ComicCon Africa as Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider franchise.
Fun Fact: Noelle was once an English teacher in Japan.
Micheline du Toit as Harley Quinn.
That’s it, no sleep for me tonight! The Angel of Death from Hellboy 2 is quite possibly the creepiest voyeur alive. Or dead. Or whatever.
This Ultramarine from Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 is obviously here to kill the heretics, purge the alien, and block your view.
ComicCon Africa included appearances from cosplay star Yaya Han, who’s no stranger to J-List. Conventions like ComicCon Africa are a great opportunity for local fans to meet internationally famous cosplayers like her. Here she is as Mulan from the Disney movie of the same name.
Africa’s Cosplay Scene
Africa isn’t new to cosplay. Earlier this year, ICON, a long-running South African comics, and gaming convention hosted the World Cosplay Summit. It was a first for the continent and another sign of cosplay’s growing appeal worldwide. Despite its anime roots, cosplay has gathered a growing following amongst comics and gaming fans, and the future is bright for the hobby. ComicCon Africa showcased again that African cosplayers are proving themselves to be a vital and innovative part of the growing phenomenon.
