Let’s Talk Onahole Maintenance!
Onaholes are a type of Japanese masturbator that allow us guys to simulate any kind of sex we could imagine. They’re generally made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), a flexible material that can easily be molded into any shape. Onaholes are made by injection molding, and they pop out of the mold like a mushroom sprouting from the ground.
But although masturbation is natural and everyone on the planet does it, it can be hard to know how to best take care of your favorite Japanese sex toys so they can take care of you. I’ll do my best to cover everything here, including how to clean and dry your onahole (including whether you actually need to), how to store one properly, and (importantly) how to hide them from your partner, if you have to!

How to Clean an Onahole?
J-List stocks some amazing onahole maintenance products, which are very popular with our customers. The best-seller is the Onahole Care Set, which comes with everything you need to clean your favorite sex toys after use, including a drying stick to absorb water and even a USB onahole warmer. There’s also a great tool for drying your onahole after washing called the ONAWASHER, which we’ve sold hundreds of. Finally, Toy’s Heart has a very popular onahole maintenance kit.
While washing your onahole after use is a good idea, here are some things to avoid:
- Avoid using dish soap, laundry detergent, or any other strong cleaner. They can strip the oils out of the material and dry the onahole out.
- You should always avoid using hot water, as that could deform the onahole. Warm or cold water is fine.
- If you wash it with water, be sure to remove all liquids from the inside before storing it.
- Avoid the temptation of turning an onahole inside out because it can lead to tearing and shorten its life.
- Never store an onahole in an airtight box or bag, as it can lead to unpleasant smells.
While washing your onahole after use is a good idea, it’s not actually required. I usually just grab a couple of tissues and make sure the inside is completely free of liquids before putting it back in its storage box. It’s an option if you want to keep things simple.
How Long Does an Onahole Last? How Often Should I Replace One?
With proper care, you should be able to get as many years of use out of a good onahole as you like. I’ve certainly used all of mine for 1-2 years at least.
The one exception to getting many years of use out of your favorite onahole is if it tears or is otherwise damaged. I’ve heard from customers of onaholes tearing occasionally, and I generally think it means those customers are buying onaholes that are too small. This is why we generally recommend customers start with offerings that are around $25 and up.
While J-List has lots of inexpensive “starter onaholes” on the site, I try to steer people towards Magic Eyes’ Sujiman Kupa line instead. They’re just a little bit more expensive, but they’ll give you years of faithful use.

Is It Normal to Use an Ero Toy Every Day?
No problem! There’s no issue with the onahole itself, and using one every 24 hours gives it just enough time to dry completely before it’s ready to go again. It takes so long for a good onahole to pass the point where you need to replace it because of wear and tear, so you should get a lot of use out of your favorite “daily driver.”
Remember that you’ll probably start a collection of these fun sex toys, so you can use a different one depending on what kind of mood you’re in.
What’s The Best Lotion to Use With My Onahole?
Virtually all of the amazing ero lotion that J-List sells is water-based and is formulated to work well with any onahole, as well as masturbation with your hand or sex with that special person. All of these various lotion types can be easily cleaned with water only. No need to use any cleaning agents.
If you use lube from your home country, just make sure that it’s water-based rather than oil-based. Lubricants like Vaseline are not recommended for use with onaholes.
How Should I Store My Ero Toy? Where Should I Hide It?
Nothing would suck like having someone find your stash of onaholes! I personally hide mine in an electronics box that I conveniently keep on my shelf. This allows the onahole to breathe while it’s drying, and Mrs. J-List presumably thinks I’m just storing some electronics on my shelf.
As stated above, the only thing to keep in mind when storing an onahole is to make sure that all liquids have been removed with tissues or some other method, and make sure you’re not storing it in an airtight bag or container, as that can cause unpleasant smells.
How to Warm Up an Onahole Before Use?
J-List has several good USB onahole warmers available, including the above-mentioned Onaho Care Set. We also have a standalone USB onahole warmer, plus an elf-themed offering for fans of the Welcome! The Forest of Perverted Elves series.
There are other options too, of course. Placing your onahole on top of a hot hard drive an hour before using it always works well.
Why Does My Onahole Smell?
A little bit of smell is to be expected from any onahole, and many of the items we sell brand themselves as “reduced onahole factory smell.” If you are letting your sex toys dry completely after use, you should be okay. If an onahole does continue to smell, it might be time to replace it. Then you can enjoy that “new vagina feeling” all over again!
Why Is My Onahole Sticky or Oily?
An oily residue can form after a year or so of use, which is the normal oils in the TPE material leaching out into the open air. Also, it sometimes comes from the buildup of lotion on the outside of the toy that can also cause odors.
There are “onahole drying powders” available, like the one that comes inside the Onaho Care Set, if you’re noticing this problem often.
How To Dispose of an Onahole
I took a deep dive into the Japanese interwebs to find out the best way to dispose of an onahole when it’s time to retire it. It seems that the most popular way of throwing away an onahole is to cut it into little pieces and wrap it up in a newspaper before disposing of it in the trash.
In my Zen and the Art of Onahole Maintenance post a decade ago, I found another suggestion about how to retire an onahole: sneak into your old junior high school and leave it for a student to find, to pay it forward.
