KyoAni Co-Founder Hideaki Hatta Passes Away, Leaves Behind Grand Legacy

The anime world must mourn once again. KyoAni’s co-founder, Hideaki Hatta, sadly passed away from an unknown illness on February 16th, 2026. He was 76. He is survived by his wife, Yoko Hatta, and three children, including Shinichiro Hatta. Hideaki Hatta leaves a truly immortal legacy that fans will celebrate for years, if not centuries, after his passing.

The official Kyoto Animation Twitter (X) account announced his passing. Many related anime studios and voice actors have offered condolences in the quotes and replies.

Kyoto Animation Takes Anime Seriously

KyoAni took the anime industry by storm in the early 2000s. Their earliest works, such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Kanon, Lucky Star, Clannad, Nichijou, and K-On!, are still widely considered some of the best anime series ever created. There’s nothing like early 2000s anime and the related anime community. We were smaller and more wholesome then. We were cringe and proud to do the “Hare Hare Yukai” dance from Haruhi. And we have KyoAni to thank for that.

They continue to deliver the best anime around with 2017’s Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid and the more recent City the Animation. Under Mr. Hatta’s leadership, the studio became known for its high-quality production and “sensitivity to the wonders and quandaries of ordinary life.” This is due to Hideaki Hatta’s unusual stance of paying employees a salary rather than having them perform contract work. Additionally, KyoAni employees train new staff in-house. These efforts lead to a focus on quality rather than production quota.

Outside of KyoAni itself, Mr. Hatta encouraged Mitsuhisa Ishikawa to found and lead Production I.G.

Hideaki Hatta Led Recovery After Tragedy

Hideaki Hatta did his best to lead KyoAni forward after the tragic arson attack of 18 July 2019.

Today, the studio’s dream continues, despite the demolition of KyoAni Building 1. Months after the attack, in October of 2019, 27 of the 33 survivors returned to work. The remaining employees took extended breaks to cope with the attack. KyoAni also resumed its training programs that foster new animation talent that same year.

While Fire Force had to be changed here and there for very understandable reasons, it continued on. City the Animation became KyoAni’s first original anime since the arson attack. There were sequels for many of KyoAni’s works, but City is the first original series. They’re following up with Sparks of Tomorrow for a less comedic tone. It’s a fitting title to show that KyoAni’s best days are still ahead of them.

Carrying on the Family Business

Hideaki Hatta and his wife, Yoko, founded Kyoto Animation all the way back on July 12th, 1985. Hideaki served as president for over 40 years and led Kyoto Animation in both good times and bad. He established himself as a kind professional with a passion for creativity. His son Shinichiro will carry on his dream and legacy. We can only hope that he lives up to, and surpasses, his father’s standard for what it is to be the president of KyoAni.
