Akane Osaki grew up admiring her father and his rakugo work. Rakugo is a traditional solo act, wherein the performer, the rakugoka, acts out numerous characters. The rakugoka uses different mannerisms and tones of voice to differentiate them. She became enthralled with his solo performances and even practiced what she saw. Tohru had few successes to his name, but his wife and daughter would always cheer for him no matter what. However, a senior rakugoka thoroughly dashed his dream, the man who controls his school. Akane decides to fulfill his dream and reach the greatest heights in rakugo. We’ll see how she performs when Akane-banashi (Akane’s Story) premieres on April 4th, 2026.

Sit a While and Enjoy Akane-banashi
Akane Osaki grew up watching her father, Tohru Osaki, perform rakugo for an audience. She was in awe of his almost magical ability to conjure whole groups of people to tell a story and entertain his spectators. That led Akane to share his dream of becoming a great rakugoka. Tohru’s successes were few over his many years of training and performing, but he persevered to make his family proud. However, his journey ended when the Arakawa School leader expelled him and every other rakugoka who undertook the test to reach the third and final level of rakugoka performer.

The three levels of rakugoka are zenza, futatsume, and shin’uchi, and Tohru could not reach the greatest heights of his craft. He broke down and became a salaryman selling concrete. Akane refused to accept this and secretly took lessons from her father’s former teacher, Shiguma Arakawa. After six years, before she even graduated from high school, Akane takes to her own stage to avenge her father’s unfair expulsion and prove that rakugoka is a true profession.
