In an ideal world, some combinations would never mix. Be it Twitter and short stack waifus, BP and marine environments, or Taco Bell and the human digestive system, some things cannot coexist. But the biggest no-no of the bunch is drugs and loneliness. And that’s the warning that Karasu-chan plugs in What Happened After My Place Got So Humid It Grew Magic Mushrooms and I Ate Them and Got Super Horny! Aka Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku Yuuhatsu. And I cannot recommend this doujin enough, because its subject matter is one that everyone should be more acquainted with.
What Happened After My Place Got So Humid It Grew Magic Mushrooms and I Ate Them and Got Super Horny! (Volume 1) Synopsis
I find it fascinating how a seemingly matter-of-fact story can have a deep-reaching meaning. That’s what I thought throughout Karasu-chan’s Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku Yuuhatsu. The story is superficially straightforward. A bored and lonely girl discovers that her apartment is so damp it’s growing mushrooms. Having nothing to eat, she slaps the questionable fungi on a sandwich that includes spoiled mayo and YOLOs it.
Shortly after, our heroine falls into a hallucinogenic trip. Whether that trip was caused by the mushrooms she ingested or the food poisoning, idk. Either way, at that moment, a delivery guy knocks at her door. And in her altered state, she comes to the conclusion that should she sleep with the guy, she’d gain a friend. When she propositions the delivery guy, he initially rejects her. But seeing such a tight and eager college girl in front of him, he gives in.
From there, Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku Yuuhatsu treats us to a pretty sad and often violent romp. Whenever the dude snaps back into his senses, he tries to leave, only to be drugged and mounted like a steed. But when our poor heroine finally passes out from all the rough play she instigated (and psychoactive compounds in her system), the dude sobers up and leaves. At the last moment, she tries to stop him, but he tells her this was a mistake. He’s not her friend. More importantly, he tells her that any friend she makes that way won’t be one either. And with that, our heroine stays behind alone and brokenhearted.

If What Happened After My Place Got So Humid It Grew Magic Mushrooms and I Ate Them and Got Super Horny! serves as anything, it’s a cautionary tale. As medicine advances and our understanding of the connection between mental and physical health deepens, what we’re discovering is grim. Things like depression, loneliness, and anxiety cause us as much harm as any disease. And that’s problematic as mental issues are at an all-time high, and much like the shield hero, they’re rising.
Loneliness is a modern-day pandemic. Depending on the demographic, between 36% and 61% of people suffer from severe loneliness. And that can feed into risky sexual behavior. Much like the protagonist in Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku, when people lack meaningful connections, they’re going to do anything to establish them. We see this frequently with adolescents, as girls who lack healthy family relationships are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior (think of Momo in Domestic Girlfriend). Of course, it happens with guys too. But we have balls, and those cast dispel on accusations of promiscuity.
We’re social creatures; some of us do rather well alone, but most of us suffer. And unfortunately for our heroine, she’s in the latter group. After 22 years of crippling loneliness and what seems to be a bad financial situation, she cracks. How she cracks leads her down the rabbit hole.
Drugs & Sex Don’t Make Friends
Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku is the type of doujin that makes me think. It’s ironic that in the age of social media, we’re lonelier than ever. In a time when many ways to reach out to others exist, we’re becoming increasingly isolated. And as that isolation grows, people frequently turn to less-than-ideal ways of coping. Karasu-chan may not have wanted to show this message. Some readers may walk away from this story with a completely different perspective. But I walked away from this title having seen the uncomfortable side of what loneliness and financial struggle can do to someone. That’s something that should be depicted way more often.
Some may decry Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku as smut not worthy of existing. But it’s a story that will warn you that using sex to fill a void or keep company is one of the quickest ways to hurt yourself. Sometimes, the pain from this can be worse than the pain an individual already feels. Unfortunately, many people realize this too late. We lose a lot of people that way, which is infuriating because it’s completely avoidable.
Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku Overall Comments
Karasu-chan did an excellent job with their artwork in this doujin. It’s gritty, it’s unhinged, and the heroine’s expressions say more than words ever could. I’ve always disliked how doujins about psychoactive drugs misrepresent the experience. They often read like they’re written by someone who has never really been intimate while under the influence of narcotics. They come off as idealistic and fail to capture the uncertain nature of what’s actually happening. It is not always a wild ride filled with ecstasy. You don’t lose yourself in delight. There’s uncertainty, and as we see with our heroine, fear and a lot of aggression.
If you’re at a point where reality is starting to break, you’re past the point where you’ll be tender. Speaking of reality, Karasu-chan eloquently presents the confusion and chaos that come with a bad hallucinogenic trip. It blurs the line between reality and drug-induced dementia so well that one could easily fall into that same confusion. Is her delivery man really a demon, or is she imagining it? Is the mushroom she’s talking to real or a figment of her imagination?
Most doujins take the simple-minded approach of “feels good = ahegao = mind break.” Shikke Sugite Haetekita Genkaku never falls into this fallacy. From the first moment to the last, it’s frenzied fornication. In this case, the goal isn’t sexual stimulation. It is about creating intimacy. That is a tough goal to achieve, and you can feel the heroine’s desperation to connect with someone. Which leaves you feeling damper after the experience.
