I read the premise and saw the character designs for the new maid-themed anime, You Are Ms. Servant (君は冥土様。, Kimi wa Meido-sama.), and immediately thought I saw what a mash-up of Mahoramatic (2001) and Violet Evergarden (2018) would look like. Yuki, a former assassin, isn’t a battle android like Mahoro. But she is emotionless and wears stylish boots like Violet. Then I learned the source material came from the artist for a manga spin-off of Tejina Senpai! These data points piqued my curiosity, and it peaked!
Will You Are Ms. Servant have the random fanservice of Mahoramatic and other maid shows like The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious? Will it have themes about loss, love, and recovery while wearing swishy skirts and high-heeled leather boots like Violet Evergarden? Would you accept a healing anime mix of Komi Can’t Communicate and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid? Read below for how Yuki and her new master will tickle your funny bone through cute reactions and bloody knife play.
Slicing Through You Are Ms. Servant’s Specifics
- What is You Are Ms. Servant? It’s an anime adaptation of the manga by Shotan that is currently in circulation. Shotan’s previous work, Isekai Senpai: Tejina Senpai wa Kono Sekai de mo Ponkotsu na You desu (Fantasy World Senpai: Looks Like Tejina Senpai Is a Failure in This World, Too), put Tejina Senpai in sexy adventurer’s outfits, so I hoped Yuki would also provide us with similar fanservice. So far, that is not in evidence. Studio Felix Film has experience animating comedies like Aharen-san wa Hakarenai and action series like MF Ghost. It also did Nekopara, so it’s no stranger to cute and sexy material.
- Who’s in it?
- Yuki/Xue — Reina Ueda (Sahara Wakasa from Chained Soldier). The former assassin had no name, but her master dubbed her the Chinese word for snow. Her new master in You Are Ms. Servant chose the Japanese word for sentimental reasons. She likes knives.
- Hitoyoshi Yokoya — Toshiki Kumagai (Yuuhi Oudou from Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush!!). The kind-hearted boy is home alone during summer vacation when a scary maid, claiming to be a distant relative, asks for a job. He hates cleaning.
- Riko Yokoya — Hikaru Iida (Newcomer). Hitoyoshi’s younger sister often comes over to play. How will she react to a strange woman living with her Onii-chan?
- Grace — Lynn (Sylpha from Tensei Shitara Dainana Ouji). Yuki’s former assassin colleague watches over her new life and plots ways to kill her. I hope she supplies more fanservice than we’ve seen in the first two episodes.
- Where can I watch it? You Are Ms. Servant streams on Crunchyroll in Japanese audio with multiple language subtitles.
Also, you can tell from the artistic opening and ending themes that You Are Ms. Servant has a big budget. Here are more reasons to watch the anime.
Mixing Bloody Flashbacks and Fluffy Gag Comedy
Much like Mahoramatic and Violet Evergarden, we see Yuki’s past violent life through her memories. The dark, bleak, and bloody flashbacks depict her as a killing tool with no personality. However, the first two episodes quickly establish that the emotionless maid has funny quirks common to many anime. She’s a clumsy maid! She can acrobatically recover from a slippery puddle, but that doesn’t stop the comedy.
Yuki also loves tonkatsu sauce. On everything! The chibi gag shots sell the humor, especially after Agemochitaro, the pudgy puppy, joins the household. Yuki spends much of the time explaining how devoid of light and flavor her life used to be. Learning how to cook and chop cabbage (the regular way) shows how becoming a mundane family member will be one of the healing themes in You Are Ms. Servant.
You Are Ms. Servant is a Slice-of-Life Anime. Emphasis on Slice!
Not much happens. That’s the hallmark of slice-of-life anime. Hitoyoshi’s name (人好) sounds like the Japanese word お人好し (ohitoyoshi), meaning “a soft-hearted person.” It can also have the connotation of “easy mark or simple soul,” so people can take advantage of Hitoyoshi’s kindness. He has already adopted a maid and a puppy in the first two episodes, based solely on an assassin’s word as a distant relative and a sketchy note in a box with a fat puppy. Hitoyoshi’s character traits will drive the heartfelt dialogue as Yuki learns to live a peaceful life.
Grocery shopping, using a mop, and petting a puppy are more challenging to Yuki than throwing knives and slicing flesh. Because she’s learning how to manage a mundane life, the usual slice-of-life settings of a house interior and walking around the neighborhood fit You Are Ms. Servant’s story. Yuki’s fluffy gag reactions also match the material.
Yuki and You Are Ms. Servant are Gorgeous
The animation and art style, notably when focusing on Yuki’s eyelashes and boots, use soft light and atmospheric effects to capture the healing tone. Yuki and Hitoyoshi talk a lot, so it helps to have something pretty to look at. But remember, Yuki was a slashing-style assassin. Her acrobatics have fluid motion, and her knives are extra shiny.
Here’s a warning, though: You Are Ms. Servant does not have ecchi fanservice. An emotionless maid suddenly showing up at your door sounds like the setup for a hentai doujin plot. But this anime’s story is a fluffy comedy, with coming-of-age themes thrown in with the trauma-healing ones. Don’t expect cleavage shots, lucky sukebe, or panchira when Yuki flips around. Let’s see what changes when Grace’s arrival complicates the reticent maid’s new life.
