Why Do Anime Fans Think Blue Hair Anime Girls Never Win Love?
If there’s one thing humans do, it’s recognize patterns…even when they’re not necessarily there. The first thing we do as babies is learn the patterns in the faces of our mothers and fathers. Then we begin the slow process of assembling language and grammar inside our brains. Before we know it, we’re seeing the shapes of ancient gods in the constellations above us, despite these stars often being farther from each other than they are from us.
The Blue Hair Curse in anime resembles the Red Shirt Curse in the original Star Trek. We all remember seeing random crewmen with red shirts beaming down to a planet with the main cast and encountering a violent death at the hands of a lava monster or something. There’s just one problem: nearly the same number (29% vs 32%) of yellow-shirt command crew as red-shirt operations/engineering crew die in episodes of Star Trek, while a fair number of blue-shirt science officers (22%) also kick the bucket.
The Blue Hair Curse is also not perfect. In reality, plenty of anime girls with blue hair beat out their rivals and win love in a harem anime. The number is lower than brown- or blonde-haired characters who win the romance battle, but it’s not zero.

Mitsuki Hayase from Rumbling Hearts
Another gem from the early 2000s was Rumbling Hearts, aka Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. It had a ridiculous story about two lovers who couldn’t be together because of the guilt they felt over their friend Haruka receiving an injury that put her into a coma. Download speeds were slow back in those days, and I remember it taking over a week to get the next episode.
