It’s the story of an ordinary salaryman who buys a housekeeping robot named Mina and falls in love with her. He ultimately makes her his wife. BokuTsuma Is an Anime about Finding Love with Your Robot Wife
Takuma is an office worker who dated a few times but never met the right girl. Due to his job, he doesn’t have much time for housework, so he bought a secondhand housekeeping robot named Mina. Although Mina is cold and robotic, she faithfully cooks and cleans for him, quickly becoming an important part of his life. One night, after too many beers, he suggests that Mina become his wife. Eventually, they become closer, and Takuma proposes to his robot maid by giving her a ring.
Mina is a helpful robot and becomes a good companion for Takuma. But she has some personality quirks. She tends to look up unfamiliar words on the Internet with embarrassing results. Like ChatGPT, she makes erroneous assumptions about aspects of the world that a human wouldn’t. And she’s got a bit of an inferiority complex about ‘Super Mina,’ an improved version of her series with many advanced features.
But is BokuTsuma a good anime? Sure, it’s very entertaining, and I’ve loved every episode so far. It leans more towards realism than an over-the-top premise like Chobits, and fan service isn’t an aspect of the show. (Unless you’re into titanium boobies, that is.)
Instead of pandering to the male fantasy aspect of the story, it tries to tell a thoughtful narrative of what having a robot wife might be like. This includes the challenges a human and an android would experience. And the story looks to get even more complex as Mina’s previous owner — who sold her so he could buy an upgraded Super Mina model — comes back onto the scene. I can’t wait!
Why We Love Robots in Anime
Robots in anime date back to the very beginning and have always been a big part of the genre’s appeal. Here are some reasons why both fans and creators love stories about robots:
- Interesting stories. Whether it’s the “I wish I were a real boy” aspect of Astro Boy or Chii going out on a mission to buy pantsu, there are many interesting stories about robots to be told.
- No limitations. Anything that can be conceived of can be drawn. We don’t have proper robots yet, but thanks to the medium of animation, it’s not hard to imagine a world in which the PC you use today is replaced by a beautiful female robot fulfilling the same roles.
- The ability for social commentary. What would the world be like if we had beautiful female robots to date instead of actual human girls? How would society react? Issues like this can be discussed in futuristic anime about robots.
- Describing a hopeful future. In a world where most countries’ populations have peaked, how might introducing robots into the labor force help everyone? Anime can show us different kinds of robots that don’t yet exist.
- Mecha combat? If the robot girls have to engage in combat, there are many fun options, starting with Nier:Automata.
The Best Anime about Robot Romance
In addition to BokuTsuma, many other entertaining anime series also explore the relationship between robots and humans. Here are some of my favorites!
The Big O
Have you ever watched an anime because of a Figma figure? I have. When the figure for android R. Dorothy Wayneright popped up on the J-List site, I wondered where the character was from. I’d missed the original run of the outstanding Big O, an anime that asks, “What if Bruce Wayne had a giant robot and a powerful robot maid sidekick?” I’m so glad I went back and watched it!

Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song
This is one of the best futuristic anime series I can think of. In the future, advanced AI robots suddenly turn on humanity, killing everyone. A scientist sends a messenger a century into the past with details on how to undo the tragedy via a singing idol AI named Vivy.
Time of Eve
Another outstanding anime that deeply explores the complex relationships between robots and humans. It’s about a special cafe where all the differences between the robots and humans are discarded, allowing them to interact, free from the various social rules that exist between both groups. It’s just six episodes, and highly recommended.
Robot On The Road
A fun anime that reminds us never to pick up perverted robot hitchhikers. If Hayao Miyazaki ever animated a nude scene, it would have been this.
Plastic Memories
A lighthearted anime about a world in which humanity lives alongside Giftias, advanced androids that can enrich our lives significantly. The only downside? They come with a built-in lifespan of nine years and four months. I’m not crying, you’re crying!
Chobits
Of course, the most influential anime about cute robot romance is Chobits. A genius anime from CLAMP, it made everyone want to live with a cute robot girl.
