The fall season is about foundlings in the forest. Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou also has a baby found in a basket that turns into a super-talented teenage girl. S-Rank Musume (冒険者になりたいと都に出て行った娘がSランクになってた, Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S Rank ni Natteta, My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, S-Rank Daughter) has a fantasy setting with an adventurers’ guild, missions, and monsters. Goblin Slayer II has the same premise but is less relaxing and soul-healing. The core of the daddy-daughter dance is the relationship between a mountain of a man and his adopted daughter who loves him.
Much of the anime revolves around whether Belgrieve is genuinely as talented as his daughter believes. Short answer: yes. He could have stayed in the adventuring business even if he lost a leg. S-Rank Musume also explores how fate creates different but more satisfying outcomes. If Belgrieve hadn’t retired to a rural village doing odd jobs for his neighbors, would the foundling Angeline have turned into an adventurer who saves lives? Would Belgrieve have been the adventuring and survival skills teacher for the village children if he hadn’t raised Angeline? A web of helpful connections stemmed from a talented sophomore adventurer’s decision to quit after he lost his leg.
Healing Anime in Adventure Setting
There are two reasons why S-Rank Musume has a relaxing atmosphere. First, overpowered characters take tension and drama away. In S-Rank Musume, Angeline and her father are such skilled fighters that we only watch their scenes for more comedic material. Angeline takes her frustration at not seeing her father out on monsters and bandits. Belgrieve later learns Angeline’s made-up nickname for him, The Red Ogre, spreads his reputation.
Second, detailed backgrounds and lighting are deliberate calming choices. The atmosphere reminds me of the colorful settings, fantastical premise, and adoptive family relationship in Somali to Mori no Kamisama from 2020. The background musical score for S-Rank Musume also lends to its fluffy, emotional air. You can thank Studio Pinewood, specialists in background art (Cowboy Bebop, Kill la Kill, and Katanagatari), and Hitoshi Fujima (from Elements Garden, who produced the opening theme song by Yoshino Nanjou).
Let’s meet the people responsible for keeping Angeline away from her father. Unforgivable! As J-List reported on the previews in June, S-Rank Musume came from a self-publishing site before its adaptation into a light novel, before its manga edition, and now anime. You should feel confident in how polished the story will be for this fall season. The animation studio Typhoon Graphics produced the first season of Kantoku’s anime, One Room. The cast of veteran voice actors brings lovable characters to the screen.
S-Rank Musume Adopted Family
Angeline — Saori Hayami (Yor from Spy x Family and Yukino from My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU). The S-rank adventurer loves her father more than anything else. Her adventurers’ guild takes advantage of her helpful spirit.
Belgrieve — Junichi Suwabe (Shouta Aizawa from My Hero Academia and Leone Abbacchio from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind). A former adventurer gained a prosthetic leg after a magical beast bit off his leg. He returned to his hometown after the injury, where he worked hard as a farmer but never missed his daily training. He became a kind and gentle father after finding an abandoned baby girl whom he named Angeline. The “Red Ogre” is unaware of his unofficial adventurer’s title.
Anessa — Maki Kawase (Yuna from Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch!). The AAA-ranked adventurer is the organizer of Angeline’s party. She’s an orphan like Angeline but grew up in the same orphanage as their other party member, Miriam.
Miriam — Rumi Ookubo (Astolfo from Fate Series and Sylvie from How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord). The AAA-rank adventurer mage has been childhood friends with Anessa since the orphanage. Angeline does not like how Miriam has larger breasts than she does.
Thankful but Troublesome S-Rank Musume Noble Family
Helvetica Bordeaux — Marina Inoue (Tohka Yatogami from Date A Live and Armin Arlert from Attack on Titan). The eldest daughter of the Bordeaux family takes a liking to Belgrieve after Angeline saved her youngest sister from bandits and her middle sister lost a sparring match to The Red Ogre.
Sasha Bordeaux — Saku Mizuno (Ryou Yamada from Bocchi the Rock). The second daughter of the Bordeaux family is an AA-ranked adventurer. She wants Belgrieve to be her teacher after he easily defeats her in a sparring match.
Seren Bordeaux — Kana Ichinose (Suletta Mercury from Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch from Mercury and Suzu Kanade from Ayakashi Triangle). Angeline rescued the third daughter of the Bordeaux family from bandits and rushed her to the dying Count Bordeaux’s bedside. Angeline missed out on visiting her father when she escorted the noblewoman home.
S-Rank Musume (S-Rank Daughter, My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S Rank ni Natteta, 冒険者になりたいと都に出て行った娘がSランクになってた) streams on Crunchyroll in Japanese audio and multiple language subtitles.
According to the S-Rank Musume website, we’ll meet adventuring elves too! Somehow, I doubt they’ll supply the kind of “adventures” the perverted elves of Welcome! The Forest of Perverted Elves hentai series would. Did you know J-List has the official onaholes for your favorite characters? Check out the dark elf flesh of Evelyn!
Are you watching S-Rank Musume? Do you love how much Angeline brags about her father? And it’s the truth! Belgrieve thought he had retired, but his daughter pulled him back into the adventuring world. How much fun will you have watching Daddy’s Girl mess up his life?
