A new VRMMORPG anime series is set to log in on October 12th, 2023. Good Night World already looks like a dramatic series from the trailer alone. Not quite as edgy for edginess’s sake as Sword Art Online, but it has its real moments. A family that slays digital monsters together stays together, as they say.
The trailer uploaded by Netflix is available with and without English subtitles.
Studio NAZ has set up a home page to promote Good Night World and an official Twitter page. Series information, such as cast and crew, plus bonuses, such as Key Visuals, can be found there.
A Broken Family, Unknowingly Reunited
Good Night World presents a rather sad yet hopeful tale. The wildly popular VRMMORPG Planet has taken the actual world by storm. People dedicate numerous hours of their daily lives to exploring and fighting in the digital world. Death isn’t permanent, though players take a hit to the wallet and stats.
The broken Arima family are four such players. The older shut-in brother Taichiro (Daisuke Hirose) uses the moniker “Ichi” in the game. His younger overachieving brother Asuma (Nobunaga Shimazaki) uses the in-game name “AAAAA.” Their disrespected and downtrodden father, Kojiro (Akio Otsuka), calls himself “Shiro Akabane.” Finally, their mother, Sayaka (Aya Endo), who doesn’t act the part offline, does actually act like one online under the name “Mei.”
Despite hating one another offline, these four act as true family online. They’re well-known and feared as the Akabane family. Like many real-life gamers, they escaped their unsatisfying lives offline and made new lives online. They have yet to learn their offline identities and that their broken family was made whole inside Planet. Other similar trials and tribulations, such as powerful monsters, other guilds, and the legendary Black Bird, await them.
Good Night World Origins
Uru Okabe wrote and illustrated Good Night World from December 28th, 2015, to January 9th, 2017. Shogakukan published all five volumes of the series in their Ura Sunday Comics imprint and the Ura Sunday and MangaONE magazines. A sequel series, Good Night World End, began its run on August 1st, 2023. As before, Shogakukan is publishing it in the MangaONE magazine.
The J-List shop has a suggestion for those seeking a needlessly edgy and gritty VRMMORPG series. The Asuna-Undine- 1/7 KDcolle Figure Summer Wedding ver. from the Sword Art Online section is now for pre-order. A good waifu dresses the part.
