Neko Night is another exciting, lewd, and titillating game from the fine developers at Chaos-L (the L stands for “love,” obviously.) As the title implies, there are catgirls, and the player first meets one at night. This is a cute and soft romance visual novel with two sexy catgirls who love the human protagonist. There’s also a lot of ASMR, wherein said sexy catgirls whisper and talk right into the player’s ears. I highly advise players to wear headphones when playing the game for the best effect. You will want to hear those whispers, purrs, and moans up against your eardrum as you play through the romance and sex scenes.
Story
Neko Night is a feel-good story in general. Two catgirls are granted a wish by “God,” a Shinto kami, to be with their “Master,” their human who owned them when they were just normal, average cats. This makes sense because catgirls are serious business in Japan. The blue-maned catgirl’s name is Vanille, and the pink-maned one’s name is Nera. Their personalities may differ, but their love for their human master is the same. That is good because the price for being made into catgirls is that they have to have the master’s babies. Why a god would want this isn’t clear. It may just be that this particular kami is just as cultured as the rest of us.
The point-of-view character for Neko Night is Vanille’s and Nera’s human master, a freelance writer. His default name is Kaku Shimazu, and for brevity, he shall be referred to as such for the duration of this review. Kaku vaguely recalls owning a white and black cat when he was young, but he doesn’t put two-and-two together for a while.
Kaku first meets Vanille when she knocks on his door at night, when it heavily rains outside. He assumes that his editor sent her over as a “gift” and attributes her strange clothes and general demeanor as part of her act. Kaku steadily gets comfortable with her presence and even takes her advice regarding his task of writing an erotic story. He had difficulty because he lacked “experience,” and Vanille was quick and eager to provide that experience.
It should be noted that the sex scenes emphasize emotional satisfaction and physical pleasure. They are as erotic as one could want from an eroge. But the narrative also places a great deal of emphasis on an emotional connection. Kaku and Vanille begin to form a loving bond in the first scene alone. So yes, my fellow erotic visual novel fans, you’ll be able to enjoy this game and walk away satisfied, both physically and spiritually.
Art
The art in Neko Night is superb. The catgirls, Vanille and Nera, look like your standard anime catgirls. They have unnatural hair color, revealing outfits, and other mysterious aspects, such as tattoo-like marks and human/cat hybrid hands. At no point did Chaos-L try to make normal-looking girls with cat ears. They went all in on making the most eye-catching catgirls possible.
Nera and Vanille are visually distinct enough from one another for some players to pick a favorite between them. Vanille is more of the innocent type, while Nera has more of an edge to her as the tsundere type, and these personality types are perfectly expressed in their appearances. Vanille even has an ahoge forming a heart symbol. Their expressions are a joy to see, from happy to excited, and even a few comedic expressions, such as “surprise,” that were fun to watch.
Almost every part of the intimate actions is presented, including the “climax,” and it’s all free of censorship. No pixels will stand in the way of a cultured visual novel reader and their enjoyment.
Besides the characters, the settings, such as the Shinto temple, and Kaku’s apartment, are incredibly detailed. They’re not just filler places players will want to skip to get back to Kaku’s apartment. Each place has a role to play in the story.
Audio
One of Neko Night‘s selling points is its ASMR aspects. ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response.” It’s that tingling and blissful sensation someone gets when they hear something in particular. If you watch any amount of Bob Ross’s painting series, The Joy of Painting, you’ll know what I mean. The girls will speak directly into the player’s ears and make sweet sounds. The sounds they make during the more intimate scenes are a highlight. I will admit to not being an ASMR fanatic because I watch Bob Ross for the paintings. The voice actresses did a phenomenal job replicating the ASMR effect for players to enjoy.
Other audio aspects, such as background music and general sound effects, are done just as well.
Gameplay
Neko Night plays like a standard visual novel. Click to progress the scene, remove the text box to see the rest of the screen, select an option when prompted to choose between different dialogue options, and so on. A key difference is the option to control the camera during some intimate scenes. During these scenes, players can tap a “camera” button. Then the UI will be replaced by four directional arrows, allowing players to position the camera elsewhere. If players want to spend the rest of the scene focusing on a character’s chest rather than her face, they could aim the camera there and confirm the position.
Conclusion
Neko Night is a great visual novel for people who want to enjoy a lovey-dovey story with two sexy catgirls devoted to their human owner. The sex scenes are very detailed, of course, but the emotional love forming between Kaku and the catgirls is just as present, creating a perfect balance of love and lust. These scenes play out at their own pace, as every movement and emotion is clearly conveyed in finite detail. For those just looking for a good time, the dialogue can be skipped quickly to get to the next CG image.
The ability to control the camera is also a nice feature because the player can enjoy the scenes as they would like.
Neko Night is well worth a look. The story and art are terrific, the characters are endearing, and fans of catgirls will have plenty to love and enjoy.
