Guess I’m going to have to update my most anticipated series of the upcoming season list thanks to a surprise announcement from Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story!
We’ve known for a while that the Madoka Magica spinoff anime would get a second season. On Thursday, June 10th, the staff behind the series revealed that the second season is going to air sooner than anyone expected. How soon? How does next month grab you?
That’s right, Magia Record season two has been sneakily announced for this summer with little fanfare beyond a brand new key visual, which feels out of character for anything related to the Madoka Magica franchise.
Originally a mobile role-playing game that tells a spinoff story starring a girl named Iroha Tamaki searching for her sister, the game launched in Japan in August 2017 and in North America in June 2019. Unfortunately, despite the strong push that Aniplex made to get people to play this game in English, it quickly withered on the vine and was shut down in September 2020.
The studio that first produced the original Madoka Magica anime, SHAFT, returned to produce the animation for Magia Record. Doroinu wrote and directed the series with Junichiro Taniguchi providing the character designs, and Takumi Ozawa composing the background music. Without spoiling too much about the story, it’s also worth noting that all the returning characters were voiced by their original cast members.
Despite how much I loved Madoka Magica (even after ten years), I didn’t get into Magia Record as much. It was a hauntingly beautiful series to look at and the story was certainly mysterious and compelling, but it didn’t hook me in like the original series did. Despite that, this is good news for fans who can’t get enough of the dark magical girl story that this franchise has become famous for.
