This upcoming Sunday is Mother’s Day, a day to appreciate all the wonderful mothers in our lives, both in the IRL world and in anime. I asked J-List’s awesome customers to share their favorite anime mothers with us, and together we compiled a pretty good ranking!
What Makes a Great Anime Mother?
There are some basic rules to creating a memorable anime mother, which includes:
- They are extremely dedicated to their children, and will do anything for them…sometimes even giving up their own lives.
- Anime mothers have odd foibles or character traits that provide entertainment for the audience.
- They are often hot af, and provide sexy fanservice to entertain us.
Because we all love different anime moms for different reasons, I decided to break my “top anime mothers” ranking into three different groups, giving the five best mothers across three different categories, in the spirit of my recent post on the top anime ever across ten categories. Let’s get started!
The Top Sexy Anime Mothers
Everyone loves anime MILFs, and sexy anime moms are always lots of fun for fans.
Cattleya from Queen’s Blade. A hilariously sexy woman who fights along with her young son, she’s always a fun character to watch.
Tsuki Uzaki from Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! The only thing better than a busty university student who wants to hang out with us is when she has an even bustier mom who thinks we want to do sexy things with her.
Haruka Ouma, mother to Shu from Guilty Crown. One of the best eye-candy drunk anime mothers in years, Haruma is actually Shu’s stepmother, with no blood relation to him. Just saying…
Delia Ketchum. Pokemon was the legendary anime that made millions of boys experience strange feelings towards Misty/Kasumi that would lead them to become hentai fans. I wonder how many kids were attracted to the sweet motherly love of Delia? (The image is an edit)
Rinko Iori from Gundam Build Fighters. If you haven’t watched this show, the only Gundam series set in “our” universe, then make sure you watch it. Among other things, it features voice actress Kotoni Mitsuishi, who voiced Sailor Moon and Misato Katsuragi as the titular (heh) sexy mom from this series.
The Top Comic Relief Anime Moms
We love anime moms who entertain us with their bizarre personalities and fun character traits. Here are five great ones!
Yoshie Hanabatake, mother to Yoshiko from Aho Girl. Her main goal in life is to make sure Akuru-kun marries her idiot daughter Yoshiko, and take her off her hands.
Chizuru Hoshino from Wataten. A bizarre but fun anime about a female university student who develops an unhealthy obsession with her younger sister’s friend, I loved the way the mother constantly made disapproving tsukkomi remarks to her daughter.
Kinue Hayase, from Masamune-kun no Revenge. Some adult-aged characters are designed as lolis for comic relief, and the 42-year-old mom from this show was one of the best.
Sanae Furukawa from Clannad. Although she’s one of the most motherly characters in anime, she’s usually crying and running away because the other characters don’t like the awful bread she bakes.
Finally, while Mamako Oosuki from Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? could easily make the list of top sexy anime mothers, she’s so over the top that I view her as more of a comic relief anime mom more than anything else.
The Most Dedicated Anime Mothers
Finally, let’s look at the best anime moms who would do anything for their kids, sometimes being so dedicated that we can’t help but tear up.
Hana from Wolf Children. One of the most dedicated and awesome anime moms around.
Yasuko Takasu from Toradora. While she spends most of the time on-screen acting sexy or irresponsible, the end of the series reveals a deviously complex character we can’t help but love.
Sachiko Fujinuma from Erased. How many mothers would take a knife for their sons, then spend 15 years nursing them back to health after a coma?
Clara Magnolia from Violet Evergarden. A light-hearted romantic anime everyone should watch! No, really! In reality (highlight to read) Clara is sick, and engages Auto Memories Doll Violet Evergarden to write multiple letters to her daughter Ann to be delivered on Ann’s birthday each year, in the ultimate expression of motherly love imaginable.
Evangelion, the most legendary anime mom in history is Yui from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
