I recently published a post about the popularity of demi-human anime girls, with cute animal features. Now we’ve got an Anthropomorphic Anime Character Design Book book that gives you ideas about how to create original characters with cute anthropomorphic features. Let’s take a look at it!
The word in Japanese is 擬人化 gijinka, and it describes the turning of non-human objects including animals or even WWII ships into human characters, usually super cute females that fans can obsess over. This book basically designs several groups of idols, giving each different kawaii features like animal-inspired designs ears or fangs, fluffy tails, and otherwise bridging the gap between human and non-human. One artist responsible for the rise of this kind of cute blending between human and non-human is Fumikane Shimada, creator of Strike Witches and many other related series.
The book is great both as an artbook as well as a How to Draw book, for artists looking to improve their technique. A lot of time is spent on how to color using Photoshop, to get the final illustration style you want. The art is done by illustrators .suke, Lyon, mokuri, and Oriko Sakura.
