Zack Snyder, of Justice League fame, will bring his writing-producing-directing chops to Netflix as he creates a Norse mythology themed anime series for the streaming service. While details on the series have yet to be revealed, production of the series will remain tight-knit as long-time collaborator Jay Olivia steps in as co-creator alongside Snyder, as well as executive producer, showrunner, and director. Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will also be assisting in production through Zack Snyder’s production company, The Stone Quarry.
Though The Stone Quarry has produced animated features before, and members of its production staff are familiar with producing an anime series, (Deborah Snyder is currently part of the production of Netflix’s newest original anime series, Trese), this will be the company’s first foray into both anime and television production. It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to hold their own against the countless other anime series available on Netflix, both in regard to art and content. The idea of Norse mythology filtered through the lens of anime brings up a lot of questions. What will the tone of the series be like? Will there be an overarching plot arc, or will each episode be a different story? Are the stories going to be centered around familiar Norse gods, or will we get to see more diversity in the Norse pantheon?
Luckily, Netflix has a great deal of faith in what Snyder and his production company will bring to the table. John Derderian, head of Netflix’s anime programming, released a statement: “Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation. We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style.”
Even with Netflix’s vote of confidence, there’s no doubt the series may be a point of contention for fans of all types, even without art or a logline to go on. But given the success of both Netflix’s original anime series and the success of anime on the platform in general, there’s always the possibility we’ll have nothing to worry about.
