What Anime Deserves a New Season?

What Anime Deserves A New Season
It’s perhaps the question most debated by fandom on social media: what anime deserves a new season? Sometimes it’s fans protesting a show they loved that ended with a whimper and deserves to have the story properly resolved. Sometimes it’s fans of the manga (or the game, or the light novels) who are agitating for their favorite arc to get animated. Sometimes it’s a show that was not well received (like the original 2002 Kanon, or the first Fullmetal Alchemist) and had to be remade from scratch in order to live up to the original work.

We asked our Twitter followers what anime deserves a new season, and here are some of the responses we got.

  • Gabriel Dropout. Sounds good to us. Since Himouto! Umaru-chan, by the same writer, got a second season, maybe we have reason to hope.
  • No Game No Life has a lot of people waiting for a story continuation.
  • Spice and Wolf, the beloved anime about the economics of fictional medieval countries, with a sexy wolf goddess on top.
  • Another fan favorite is The Devil is a Part-Timer, an ingenious reverse isekai about a demon who comes from another world to ours…and works at McDonald’s MgRonald. The story needs to continue!
  • Perhaps the show most people want to see continue is Konosuba. If the number of high-quality Konosuba figures that get released is any indication, maybe we can hope for a new season after the movie hits this summer.
  • Land of the Lustrous. It’d be great to see more of the closest anime has come to capturing the majesty of the original Fantasia.
  • One of my personal pet peeves is romantic stories that never get resolved properly, which in extreme cases is both a slap in the faces of loyal fans and a warning to avoid getting caught in future traps. When Doga Kobo’s Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-kun failed to give us the ending we wanted, it made me less likely to watch shows like This Art Club Has a Problem! and Tada-kun Never Falls in Love, also by the same staff. Can we get some kind of compact between animation studios and fandom not to leave us hanging like this?
  • Ditto for Haganai. One of the most brilliant shows about the awkwardness of making friends in high school, it set up a great series of relationships…then left fans without any resolution.
  • How about more Interviews with Monster Girls? My own favorite monster girl anime, it was delightful the way it developed the relationship between the teacher and his monster students. I especially loved the attention paid to the realism of the world, showing how governments would have to offer special services to monster girls so they could properly integrate with society.
  • Of course, no matter how perfect or happy an ending was, there are always some fans who want more seasons. Toradora? Really? I guess some fans are never satisfied…

If second seasons are sometimes difficult for studios to give us — and sadly it often comes down to how many fans bought those gorgeous but pricey limited Blu-rays — perhaps a better model is what Kyoto Animation did with Tamako Market, tying up the love story with the final movie Tamako Love Story in a way that rewarded fans who stuck with the show. If a full-blown movie isn’t possible, perhaps we can ask for (and perhaps fans can enable through crowd-funding) final OAVs to our favorite shows that will tie up the story elements.
