As usual, the current anime season is well-stocked with tensei stories of getting reincarnated with magical powers. Today, let’s look at the fun Tensei Shitara Dainana Ouji, aka I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince So I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability. Or you could just call it “Magical Shota’s Juicy Thighs.”

The Story of I Was Reincarnated As The 7th Prince
Tensei Shitara Dainana Ouji is the story of a mage who’s obsessed with magic ability but who has no real talent. He gets killed, but this turns out to be good news for him. He’s reincarnated as Lloyd de Saloum, the 7th prince of a kingdom. Since he’s not in line to inherit the throne, he has lots of free time to study magic!
Young Prince Lloyd wants to learn all the magic he can with his new demon sidekick Grim. But life still isn’t easy for him. He usually has to give the slip to his overprotective maid Sylpha, who wants him to learn sword fighting and other “princely” skills. Or (much better for us), she wants to force him to take a bath with her and all the other maids in the castle.
7th Prince Has Top-Tier Waifus
The female characters are entertaining and quite easy on the eyes. First we have Sylpha, always doting over Lloyd-sama almost to the point of going yandere. Then there’s Tao, a China-dress-wearing adventurer Lloyd meets near a dungeon, who’s seeking a handsome man strong party to team up with. She falls in love with Lloyd while he’s disguised with an older body. Finally, we have the tanned Ren, a member of the Assassin’s Guild who will show up in the series soon.
Which girl will steal your heart? Watch the show and find out!
Oh, and if you like “dummy thicc” thighs, you’ll probably love the character designs. Even Lloyd gets the “Lord of the Thighs” treatment.
The Animation is Surprisingly Good. The Story? Not So Much.
I was impressed with the quality of the animation by Tsumugi Akita Animation Lab. This is a young animation studio that doesn’t have much history. The company has worked with various studios like Product I.G. and J.C. Staff doing backgrounds and other side work, but this is their first-ever TV series.
The story, on the other hand, is predictably all over the map. This is because Reincarnated As The 7th Prince started out as a “Narou-kei” novel on the Let’s Become a Novelist website before getting picked up for publication by Kodansha. If you adjust your expectations going in, the setting and characters are more than enough to keep you entertained each episode.
What’s the Allure of “Shota” Stories?
If you’ve browsed the “Straight Shota” section on J-List, you’ll see that there are many products involving a sexy, experienced woman and a younger male with no experience. Also known as Onee x Shota, the genre started out as an offshoot of BL before finding more popularity in this updated form. The name comes from the popularity of the character Shoutarou from the Tetsujin 28 manga and anime.
Many mainstream anime use the “Straight Shota” story dynamic besides Tensei Shitara Nana Ouji. These include Queen’s Blade, Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou, Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory, The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious, and (partially) Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.
Some reasons fans enjoy shota genre anime:
- The aesthetics can be visually pleasing to both male and female fans. Also, the cuteness of a young male character might bring out nurturing emotions, similar to how moé causes fans to feel protective of female characters.
- Viewers get to experience the thrill of a sexual relationship in which an experienced female takes the lead. Obviously, there’s some story self-inserting going on here by male fans. Hey, don’t judge us!
- There’s plenty of opportunity for humor. It was fun to experience the anxiety of the main characters about “climbing the stairs of adulthood” in series like Kanakon and Sunohara-sou.
- There’s no sense of responsibility from the male character’s point of view, which is low-key relaxing for some fans. Also, there’d be less pressure to satisfy a partner if we were significantly younger than her.
- Shota stories are popular with both men and women. Voice actress Yuuki Aoi admitted to being addicted to the shota genre in a now-famous interview on YouTube. I love any kind of sexy storytelling that brings both guys and girls together!
Note that the Japanese language makes a distinction between long and short vowels. Shouta (しょうた, with a long vowel) is a reasonably common name for boys in Japan in recent years. Shota (ショタ, with a short vowel) is the name for this unique ero genre, and it’s never confused with the name Shouta.
