Every time a new anime season starts, we get a new offering of “seasonal waifus,” that is, cute 2D girls that will compete for popularity among fans, who make memes about them and try to entice other fans to join their “waifu teams.” I think the anime that offers the best and most wholesome waifus this season is HigeHiro. Keep reading to see why!
The Girls from HigeHiro are Way More Wholesome than Nagatoro-san
If you asked me who would be the “top waifu” of the new season two weeks ago, I would have answered Nagatoro-san from the long-awaited Please Don’t Bully Me, Miss Nagatoro!, because of how many memes have been made about the manga. Nagatoro is cute, has that dark anime girl GAL look that everyone enjoys, and even sports a skinfang. But watching the first episode, I found her utterly unlikable, cruelly bullying the main character of that show in ways that I just can’t support. No, the show that has the most wholesome 2D waifus of the season is HigeHiro, aka I Shaved. Then I Brought a High School Girl Home.
HigeHiro is a Fresh Harem Anime Concept for Grown-Ups
Yoshida is a company employee who’s had a crush on his elegant coworker Airi Gotou, but when he finally confesses his feelings for her, he’s shot down because she has a boyfriend. Drunk and dejected, he walks home, where he meets a “JK” — joshi kousei, or female high school student — squatting under a streetlight. She has nowhere to go and no money and offers to have sex with him if he’ll put her up for the night.
The girl is Sayu Ogiwara, a runaway from Hokkaido who’s come down to Tokyo to get away from… we don’t know, but some kind of abusive situation at home. In order to survive, she’s sold her body to men along the way. Yoshida is disgusted with the kinds of abusive adults she’s encountered in her sad life, and lets her stay for free…but she has to do chores and other housework to earn her keep. And if she tries to seduce him again, he’s going to kick her out.
While living with a cute teenage girl sounds like the perfect escapist fantasy for any ojisan (middle-aged guy, anyone over the age of 25 basically), things get even better for Yoshida. We soon meet his kouhai Mishima, who Yoshida has to discipline for writing sloppy code. Mishima learns that Yoshida was recently rejected romantically by Gotou, and goes into “attack mode” to steal him for herself.
But since “after a girl rejects you is when the battle really gets serious,” we’re also left wondering whether the gorgeous Gotou is really as uninterested in Yoshida as she seemed in the first episode. She invites him out for Korean BBQ and is full of questions about why he’s changed so much recently…almost as if he’s found a girlfriend or something.
This is What We Wanted for Saki from Metamorphosis
One thing I’ve observed is that every few years a hentai work comes along that becomes so famous that it becomes ubiquitous among general anime fans. Back in the day Urotsukidouji: Legend of the Overfiend was the legendary hentai work everyone knew, then it was Bible Black, then the Taimanin Asagi hentai ninja series. Another such work that pretty much every fan is familiar with is Metamorphosis (also translated as Emergence), the tragic story of high school girl Saki Yoshida’s transformation from a bookish, boring girl into a mind-broken slut addicted to drugs. If only Saki had encountered a good man like Yoshida in her life, as Sayu has…
