One of the most incredible achievements in the history of anime has been the influential Fate/stay night, which started as a visual novel published by a small doujin software maker named TYPE-MOON. Over the past 18 years, it became one of the most famous media franchises in the world, a global social phenomenon that’s still going strong today. I asked J-List customers to share their favorite Fate series waifu with us, so let’s see their top picks!
The History of Fate/stay night and TYPE-MOON
In 1998, Takashi Takeuchi was laid off from his job as a “graphicker” (what a CG artist is called in Japan’s visual novel industry) at a company called Compile. It was a fortuitous event because it caused him to call up some friends he used to draw doujinshi with back in junior high school and ask if they wanted to make indie computer games with him. The result was TYPE-MOON, the doujin circle that would bring out such amazing games as Tsukihime, Melty Blood and the 18+ Fate/stay night visual novel.
I’m floored by the scale of the success of the Fate series. Not only was their timing perfect, hitting the doujin-game-to-anime boom that catapulted Higurashi When They Cry to major fame, but they were able to partner with smart anime studios and continually give fans new stories that were both fresh and familiar. The way multiple versions of characters exist throughout the various Fate works is a very original approach, and for fan artists, there are always new ways to lewd beloved characters.
Do you want Fate, but with loli magical girls? Watch Fate/Kaleid. Do you prefer slapstick jokes? Then go with Carnival Phantasm. Would you like a cooking show involving characters from the Fate universe? Then watch Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family.
When the social game boom emerged in the early 2010s, the company made Fate/Grand Order one of the top mobile games in history, earning more than $5 billion by 2021, which was incredible to watch unfold. With the game’s huge profits, they could fund high-budget anime series like Fate/Apocrypha and the FGO anime, which lowered their tax bill while bringing in even more fans.
Anyone can get lucky with a story idea and find success once, but the amazing creators at TYPE-MOON were able to re-invent themselves year after year, always finding new success. I salute them.
