It’s that time again when the current summer 2019 anime season winds down and a new anime season gets ready to begin. The past anime season was a lot of fun, with a harem of perverted girls, the best anime for workout motivation, and lots of useful information about how to survive on a desert island. Wondering what anime should you watch in the upcoming Fall 2019 anime season? Read this post to find out!
A new anime season is always a veritable Schrödinger’s box of potential, with no one knowing what will be inside until we open it. Which highly-anticipated series will let fans down with poor writing or predictable stories? Which series will be chosen as the “meme king” on Twitter and Reddit? Which shows will feature a tiny bit of fanservice in the first episode only, then never anything after that? And most importantly, which shows will offer the best waifus for fans to get excited about on social media? Let’s take a look at 12 of the 90+ new and continuing series in the fall 2019 anime season and try to help you decide!
Azur Lane
Do you like WWII ships re-imagined as cute girls? If so, then you’ll probably want to watch the Azur Lane series, based on a Chinese side-scrolling “bullet hell” game and inspired by Kantai Collection and Touhou. I will certainly be tuning in!
Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia
While I sometimes find myself tiring of never-ending “eternal” stories — if I wanted that I’d read American comics — a major Fate/* series is not something I can refuse. The opportunity to see more Mashu on-screen has me looking forward to the new Fate/Grand Order series!
Psycho-Pass 3
I’m a card-carrying fan of Nitroplus, and love working with the company on games like Steins;Gate or the recent high-res remaster of Saya no Uta. Another gem the company has created is the Psycho-Pass series, which is returning for a third season, streaming on Amazon. Read my overview of the top Nitroplus titles here.
Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai 2
One of the best “harem” anime series in recent has been Bokuben, aka We Never Learn, a show about a boy tasked with tutoring several cute girls. Will he pick literature girl Fumino, science whiz/udon girl Rizu, or tanned sports girl Uruka?
Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo
Time will tell whether OreSuki (e.g. Are You Really the Only One Who Likes Me?), about a boy who receives “love confessions” from two girls who are actually telling him they like his friend, is worth our attention. Since I watch all the “ridiculously long light novel title” series on general principle, I’ll check this one out. Available on Crunchyroll.
Assassins Pride
Visually interesting anime based on a light novel and manga, the story is set in a world that has no sun or moon, and where a magical power called mana is central to life.
Houkago Saikoro Club
An anime about “analog games,” Afterschool Dice Club seems like it’s going to try to be the Dagashi Kashi of board and card games. Unfortunately, browsing the list of games that are covered in the manga, I can’t see many that I even recognize. It might be a good way for fans of analog games to discover some esoteric new games to play. Anyone up for a few rounds of the hit Czech card game “Code Name”?
Shokugeki no Souma: Shin no Sara
A fourth “plate” of Food Wars, a show that always makes me hungry whenever I watch it.
Chihayafuru Season 3
I often write about how often fans complain overly much about how “moe has taken over” or “every anime is about idols.” The reality is, with around 50 new series introduced each season, there’s tons of room for beautiful and subtle stories to be told alongside more mainstream works. One such example is Chihayafuru, an outstanding story about a girl named Chihaya and two male friends who compete in a traditional card game called karuta played with cards featuring 1000-year-old poets. I wonder if the love triangle will be resolved in the new season?
XL Joushi.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is going to be a short ecchi anime about a professional woman who gets put in sexy situations with her super hot boss, and that there’ll be “TV broadcast” and full hentai versions available, similar to such steamy titles as My Arranged Marriage Partner Is My Troublesome Student or The 25-Year-Old High School Student. Interestingly, this kind of sexy anime is aimed at women, an extension of sexual comics called redicomi (lady comics) that allow women to experience fantasy situations not usually available to them in media.
Africa no Salaryman
We’ve got two different shows involving anthropomorphic animals to choose from, African Office Worker (which has animals from Africa working in a Japanese office) and Beastars (high school drama anime ala Zootopia). Which anime should you watch? We’ll try to tell you!
Continuing Anima Series You Should Watch
It’s nice that we also have continuing second cours of some popular shows, including Dr. Stone, Fire Force as well as the well-received Vinland Saga, a refreshing story about Vikings. So keep watching those if you’ve been following these series.
