The anime season marches on, and another fun show I’ve been following is We Never Learn, aka Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai or BokuBen, which is part of the recent mini-trend of anime series built around the trope of “can’t study.” It’s an adorable harem anime about a hardworking main character named Nariyuki who wins a full scholarship to university…as long as he agrees to tutor three genius students who are having trouble in different areas of study. The girls are Furuhashi, who’s a genius at literature but terrible at math, super analytic Ogata, who’s gifted at math and science but unable to understand liberal arts to save her life, and Takemoto, the tanned “sports musume” who can handle any athletic challenge, but is failing all her academic subjects. In every episode, Naruyuki does his best to help each girl improve in her needed area of study so she can get into the university of her choice…and naturally, all three girls fall head over heels in love with him.
The proof of a harem anime is in the eating, as they say, and I can definitely say We Never Learn is a delightful escape from the drudgery of reality, populated with adorable characters who are reasonably fresh and enjoyable to watch. Each girl has her “charm point”: literature girl Furuhashi wants to learn science so she can discover the star that represents the soul of her dead mother, math whiz is a glasses-wearing kuudere who manages to be adorable in every scene she’s in because of her insecurity, and sports girl Takemoto has the most adorable physical reactions, plus (and this might just make her my waifu of the season), a tanned body with tan lines, which is totally my fetish.
Is the We Never Study anime something you should watch? Certainly it’s a fun series I’m liking a lot, and if you love shows in which the kawaii-ness of the characters are the main driving point to the story, rather than creating complex structures of plot (or plot), or, um, sacrificing animation quality in favor of the seiyu budget, like Quintessential Quintuplets did. I think We Never Learn a fun show that everyone should check out!
