Three of my favorite words in anime are “perverted science girl.” This is partly because “perverted science girl” is fun to type, but also because perverted science girls are an enjoyable trope in anime. Their knowledge of science and biology makes them curious about sex, but their social awkwardness leads to the most adorable comedy situations. The newest anime to explore this genre is Ueno-san wa Bukiyou, aka How Clumsy You Are Miss Ueno.
It’s the story of Ueno-san, the president of the school science club. She’s in love with Tanaka, a dense boy who has no idea of Ueno-san’s feelings. Every episode involves her using her ridiculously advanced inventions to try to get Tanaka to hold her hand, or look up her skirt, or have an “indirect kiss” with her, or worse. Ueno-san’s reactions when something inevitably goes wrong are so sweet.
Ueno-san wa Bukiyou is a fun show, especially if you off-color anime based on 4-koma sexual gags like Seitokai Yakuindomo. The episodes are fun, and at 10 minutes per episode, it successfully re-creates the not-too-short, not-too-long model of Aho Girl. A great show to relax with after work.
Ueno-san is far from the only perverted science girl in Japanese pop culture. Some others we love include
