Talentless Nana, a Great Horror-esque Anime for Halloween
October is a great time to watch chilling anime with lots of violence and blood. On Monday I talked about the new Higurashi When they Cry series, which is certainly a fine place to start if you’re looking for something to curdle your blood. Another currently-airing anime to consider is Talentless Nana, aka Munou na Nana, a fun show in the “children avoiding getting murdered” genre!
The year is 20xx, and children with various esper powers called “talents” have started to emerge. To prepare them for the upcoming fight against beings known as Enemies of Humanity, the students are all sent to a special high school on an island. The students’ powers include healing, teleportation, the ability to assume the form of other students, and the ability to see the future in photograph form. A cute-as-a-button transfer student named Nana joins the class, announcing she has the power of mind-reading.
Unknown to the other students, Nana is lying about her esper power. In reality, she’s “talentless” and has no special abilities, unless you count a relentless murderous streak. In reality, Nana is an assassin sent to kill all the other students, who have been deemed the true “Enemies of Humanity” by world governments. And so the show follows Nana as she tries to eliminate all the other students in the class, all while presenting the cutest face most of the time.
Talentless Nana is great for several reasons.
- The extreme cuteness of Nana, while she’s in kawaii mode, is adorable, and watching her switch easily into the “murder” mode is a lot of fun.
- Nana’s antagonist is Onodera, an obsessive boy whose power is immortality, and who uses his inquisitive mind to try to trap Nana.
- The unexpected twists and turns in the story, which you can expect of any good anime based on a popular seinen manga, keep fans on their toes, while the comedy element is downright adorable.
