When I start watching all the new shows in a new anime series, I keep my eyes open to see which offerings might be worth introducing to J-List customers. If there’s sexy fan service, then so much the better. One show I’m enjoying is the currently airing Lv1 Maou to One Room Yuusha, aka Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero. Keep reading to see if you should watch!
Should You Watch Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero? Sure!
Ten years ago, Max the Hero and his other party members defeated the dark lord Maoh. Now, Maoh has awakened after a decade of sleeping to recover his strength, and is eager for a rematch with Max…although he’s now trapped in an androgynous chibi body. Maoh goes to see Max and is shocked to find that his nemesis has become a shut-in, living in a filthy apartment. Years of having no enemies to fight coupled with some social missteps that got picked up by the media have made Max a loser, drinking alcohol during the day and not working. So Maoh decides he’s going to help Max regain his pride as a hero.
The anime is based on a popular manga by artist toofu which has run for eight tankoubon volumes. The animation by SILVER LINK., who brought us fun works like Kokoro Connect, HameFura and Chivalry of a Failed Knight, is top notch.
The characters are all enjoyable to watch. Max, who’s totally given up on life. The energetic Maoh, who gives off a Jahy-sama vibe. Max’s old party member Fred, a former cleric who’s come back into Max’s life after a decade to complicate things. The unexplained ghost that lives in Max’s closet.
Oh, and Maoh’s sexy demon assistant Zenia. I love her for several reasons, from her quirky formality to the skintight swimsuit she wears. The voice acting performance by Youko Hikasa makes the character even better.
The anime is a lot of fun so far, a comedy that’s somewhat similar to my beloved The Devil is a Part-Timer, which also portrays characters from a fantasy setting who find themselves living in the human world. But that show stupidly left a nine-year gap, causing fans to move on to other shows. As a result, everyone pretty much ignored last year’s season 2. Maybe they can recapture their mojo in the upcoming season 3?
But Is It a Good Anime?
Considering the goofiness of the story, it’s impressive how interesting the characters in Level 1 Demon Lord are. We really feel bad for Max’s fall from grace as a result of his naïveté about how the media works and are rooting for him to get back his mojo as a Hero. I thought Maoh might be an annoying character to watch each episode, but her concern over her former enemy is really touching to watch. Make sure you give this fun show a try!
Thanks for reading this blog post about the Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero anime. It’s definitely worth watching if you like to laugh…and enjoy a good swimsuit-covered butt!
