The new Macross Frontier “Wings of Goodbye” (Sayonara no Tsubasa) movie opened yesterday, and being a dedicated Japan blogger and long-time Macross fan, I decided to go see it. Like the first installment, the movie was great, providing an outstanding new layer of story, character and music over one of my favorite series in recent years, with all new animation, too. My son also likes the Macross Frontier series, so I brought him along, and we had fun deconstructing the themes and memes of the Macross saga and comparing them to the somewhat drier and more realistic Mobile Suit Gundam series, plus Star Trek and Star Wars. Father-and-son nerd togetherness is fun!
