Happy Twintail Day! Today, February 2nd, has been designated as #ツインテールの日 or #TwintailDay by the Japan Twintail Association, which is an actual thing. It’s become a fun day for people on Twitter to post photos and art of their favorite idols or anime characters wearing their hair in twintails. Let’s check out the most iconic anime girls wearing twintails in this blog post!
Today is Happy Twintails Day! Who Are the Most Iconic Anime Girls With This Hairstyle?
Why have twintails become such a famous character trope within anime? As with the fascination for shimapan and the rise of the unruly strand of hair called ahoge, the origin of twintail hair lies in the 1990s. The popularity of Sailor Moon’s unique hairstyle left a big mark on other creators, who started incorporating the design into their own characters. While the fascination with this hairstyle came out of the 90s, the name itself came from one of the monsters in the fourth Ultraman series.
What makes an “iconic” character with twintails? I’d say the character should have made a deep impression on fans, especially new fans who had just gotten into anime, or they should represent a genre that’s closely associated with this unique hairstyle.
First up is Chiyo from the legendary Azumanga Daioh, which basically created the slice-of-life anime genre. The jokes about her strange hair made her an instant favorite with fans.
Next is Sasami from Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and Tenchi Muyou!, whose unique character design would help define the 1990s in anime.
Lucky Star was an important “gateway drug” that brought a lot of new fans into anime, and their first “twintail waifu” was probably Kagami.
Another iconic twintail character is Mayoi Hachikuji from Monogatari Series. Incidentally, Kagami from Lucky Star and this character share a voice actress with another famous anime character with “twintails” (sort of). Can you guess who?
Azusa Nakano from K-On! is another character who made an impression on early fans. Azusa is one of the few roles played by voice actress Ayana Taketatsu that wasn’t an incestuous sister.
Another adorable girl with this cute hairstyle is Suzu Hagimura from Seitokai Yakuindomo, who hates it when you treat her like a child.

Leave it to Kyoto Animation to identify this unique hairstyle and dial it up to 11, as they did with the character of Sanae Dekomori in Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions.
The sexual attraction of anime girls wearing twintails is hard to deny, and there are a lot of sizzling characters in ecchi shows like Maken-ki!
And twintail hair shows up in lots of hentai works. The most famous one is probably Airi from Oni Chichi!
Another extremely important character with this hairstyle is Hatsune Miku. Are you a fan?
Of course, we can’t write a post about anime girls with twintails without adding Rin Tohsaka from the Fate series, the most famous tsundere who wears her hair like this.
Finally, Sailor Moon is the “trope-maker,” as they say in the meme industry. Her massive popularity across all swaths of fandom, from girls in elementary school to boys tuning in to get a pantyshot of their favorite character in this week’s episode, created the twintail genre, which is still going strong 30 years later.
