We’re all familiar with fantasy stories featuring super-strong heroes and heroines who can pretty much accomplish any goal without breaking a sweat, like Kirito from Sword Art Online, or Rimuru Tempest from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, or the currently-airing female-focused isekai anime The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent. Overpowered main characters that fans can self-insert themselves into is one of the core features of isekai stories going back to A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. But since any trope is even better when turned on its head, you might like Kyuukyoku Shinka Shita RPG: The Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life!
Full Dive is an Anime That Subverts Our Expectations
Hiroshi Yuuki is a high school boy who isn’t living up to his potential. He gets bullied by tough kids who steal his money, and he’s given up on his once-promising career on the track team, preferring to stay home and submerge himself in video games. At least he’s got a cute younger sister named Kaede…
Today Hiroshi is happy because he’s picking up a copy of a hot new VR game. But when he doesn’t have enough money to buy the title he wants, a sexy girl named Reona in a run-down game shop sells him a game called Kiwame Quest, which promises to be a fully immersive RPG more realistic than any other game. It terms out to be somewhat of a kusogee (a shitty game), because you can’t restart if you accidentally kill your childhood friend right at the beginning, causing your other childhood friend to go into yandere mode and try to kill you.
Disgusted with such a poorly-written game, Hiroshi tries to return it to the store, but Reona makes him a counter-offer: if he’s able to clear the game, something only one person has been able to do before, she’ll marry him. But so far, all he’s managed to accomplish is receiving the title of Best-Friend Killer… and when he accidentally pees his pants in-game during a torture scene, Bedwetting Champion.
Based on a novel by the creator of Cautious Hero, the Full Dive RPG anime is best approached as an ironic comedy, because taking it seriously, as you might a series like Sword Art Online, is just not a good idea. It’s kind of like the 1999 film The Mummy, which is more a send-up of more serious adventure stories like Raiders of the Lost Ark. If you take Full Dive too seriously, you won’t like it, but realizing it’s a self-parody of the fantasy RPG genre will make it a lot more fun.
