When we first brought you news of the Deadpool: Samurai manga last year, there was mild speculation over whether or not the series would be published for Western distribution at any point. Thanks to a recent joint announcement by English manga publisher Viz Media and Marvel Comics, we no longer have to speculate. Deadpool: Samurai will make it to the West under Viz’s banner next February. While the news of a slightly longer wait for Deadpool: Samurai might be disheartening to fans, it certainly doesn’t mean that Viz or Marvel don’t have more in the manga pipeline ready to go.
First up is Marvel Meow by Nao Fuji, a Marvel employee who’s done both art and story work for other Marvel series such as the 2019 Black Cat run and Gwenpool Strikes Back. The story will be written and drawn by Fuji and follows Captain Marvel’s cat Chewie as she does what a cat does best: incite chaos.
The chaos will be made infinitely easier since Chewie’s not actually a cat, but instead a cat-like alien known as a flerken. It’s still up in the air whether or not Chewie will be using her natural alien powers to make everyone’s day a little bit harder, but since the story promises hijinks involving noted Marvel villains Thanos and Galactus, it really can’t be imagined any other way now. Of course, heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and even Deadpool are coming along on Chewie’s adventure, and there’s no telling how they’ll fare against the machinations of one mischievous flerken.
Marvel Meow is slated for release on October 12th and is available for pre-order now. While the story is a stand-alone for now, the general premise will make Marvel and cat fans alike wish it was a long-running series, no doubt.
Last in Marvel and Viz’s manga pipeline is a story only known as Secret Reverse, by famed Yu-Gi-Oh! author Kazuki Takahashi. While details on Takahashi’s new story aren’t available just yet, we do know that it’s slated for release sometime next summer.
All in all, it looks like Viz and Marvel’s partnership is hitting the ground running, and there’s no doubt this lineup has fans dying to see what’s next. At the very least, the long wait for Deadpool: Samurai means fans can start clamoring for an anime adaptation, especially of the Deadpool/ My Hero Academia chapter.
