A Viking Epic for the Ages
Vinland Saga presents a comparatively incredible dramatization of the Danish conquest of England in the eleventh century. The “Vinland” part of the title references a part of what is now known as North America.
Thorfinn is one of the primary characters in this series. He is likewise based on the historical figure Thorfinn Karlsefni Thórdarson. His father, Thor, was murdered by the mercenary Askeladd. In the hopes of avenging Thor, Thorfinn works under Askeladd to one day finally challenge him to a duel.
Thor certainly hoped to instill kindness and peace in his son. Thorfinn grew up listening to tales of Vinland. And how it was a warm and peaceful place, unlike that of his frigid home. Now in England, far away from Iceland, he’s swept up during the war between the Danes and the Anglo-Saxons. He’s even employed as another of the mercenaries under King Sweyn in the Danish invasion of London. Peace and the concept of avoiding pain and misery, as his father spoke of earlier, is unquestionably a long, forgotten dream to Thorfinn.
