They say for everything there is a season and with Pokémon Sword & Shield releasing this month, it’s time to say goodbye to the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime and say hello to Ash’s new adventures in the Galar region. The newest season of the anime has even more new tricks up its sleeve, with a new art style, a secondary protagonist, a new opening theme written by indie-pop group After the Rain, and a look at a very special Pichu. The first episode of the series titled “Birth of Pikachu”, follows a cute and curious Pichu that’s hinted at to be Ash’s very own Pikachu. While the trailer below only gives us a quick glimpse of Ash’s Pikachu in its pre-evolution, it’s hard to imagine that sweet little Pichu evolving into the obstinate grump of a Pikachu that Professor Oak gives Ash.

Though the trailer is devoid of any solid glimpses of Galar or its Pokémon (aside from Pikachu getting kicked in the face by Scorbunny), it’s always nice to see Kanto in all its nostalgic glory, even if it’s only for an episode. Perhaps this season will continue this feeling of nostalgia with Ash continuing his Pokémon journey by mentoring someone that reminds him of himself when he first started out. With the Scorbunny we see in the trailer belonging to Ash’s new companion, they’ve certainly got their hands full from the jump, much like Ash and Pikachu’s rocky start. Ash and Pikachu may look back on their pasts, both together and separately, in order to help their new friends learn to work together and be an effective team.
The newest season of the Pokémon anime will premiere on November 17th with an extended episode on Tokyo TV, two days after Pokémon Sword & Shield’s global release on November 15th.
