The New Gate presents a different approach to the “VRMMO gamers trapped in a death game” genre, as seen in series like Sword Art Online. Our isekai protagonist lingered too long before logging out, leading to his departure to a different world. Cute elf girls are waiting for him, so it’s not an entire loss. We’ll see how he does when the series premieres on April 14th, 2024. We can enjoy the trailer until then.
Shinogi Kazanami published his original The New Gate to the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro between 2013 and 2016. AlphaPolis would take up publishing from there. A light novel adaptation with different artists attached to it began on December 27th, 2013, with 22 volumes currently available.
Our new isekai protagonist and two cute elf girls are as follows.
- Shinya Kiritani / Shin — Kensho Ono (Giorno Giovanna from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). The hero who defeated the last boss and freed everyone from the death game. He was drawn to a new world that resembles the online game he once conquered.
- Schnee Raizar — Asami Seto (Frill Shiranui from Oshi no Ko). Shin’s first support character. He created this High Elf 500 years ago, and she has since attained a Saint-like status worldwide.
- Tiera Lucent — Kaede Hondo (Shigeru Kamado from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). An Elf and aspiring alchemist. Her soul fused with another girl who deeply loved Shin.
Studios Cloud Hearts and Yokohama Animation Laboratory have maintained a home page and a Twitter (X) page to promote The New Gate. You can find additional series information and the Key Visuals there.
The New Gate Opens to a New World
Like Sword Art Online, The New Gate features a black-coat swordsman, Shin, who was one of thousands trapped in an online death game. He managed to defeat Origin, the last boss, and freed everyone. As a brave and kind soul, Shin waited until everyone logged out before leaving the game world. He waited slightly too long, and an actual gate opened for him. A bright light erupted and drew him into a different world.
Shin found himself in a world that resembled the game world he just left behind. The only difference is that 500 years had passed since he defeated Origin. Shin set out for his home, The Moon Shrine, and found it run by his created support character, Schnee. His death game ceased to be a game, and 500 years had passed since he saved the world. He now has countless questions, the first of which concerns how he might finally log out and return home.
