There are certain names within the anime world where once you hear that they’re involved with a title, you just automatically know what to expect due to the sheer magnitude of their reputation. Jun Maeda has such a reputation where once you hear that he’s involved with something, you know that tears will be shed. He’s very good at that, so you just know that his latest animated story, The Day I Became a God (Japanese title: Kami-sama ni Natta Hi), is going to attempt to make you cry. And it will probably succeed. As I said, he’s very good.
On Monday, September 14th, reports hit the Internet revealing that the first episode of the new series from Key, Aniplex, and P.A. Works will hit the airwaves on October 10th. To get fans excited for the new project, a special will air on September 26th which will feature behind the scenes footage and interviews.
A totally original story from Maeda, The Day I Became a God story is described on the official website as:
Hina, who awakened as a god.
She foresaw “the end of the world.”
She chooses a lone young man.
Who, as her companion,
Will spend his time with her until the very end.
We still haven’t seen a promotional video for the series, which is a little surprising, but we know who will bring this series to life. Yoshiyuki Asai will sit in the director’s chair at studio P.A. Works. Maeda is being credited as the scriptwriter. The original character designs are being produced by Na-Ga.
In terms of the main voice cast, the characters will be performed by (character names first):
Hina: Ayane Sakura
Yota Harukami: Natsuki Hanae
Kyoko Izanami: Yui Ishikawa
Ashura Kokuho: Ryohei Kimura
Sora Narukami: Yuki Kuwahara
After watching, enjoying, and crying at Angel Beats! and Charlotte, I am more than ready for whatever Jun Maeda is going to throw at me this October. If you’re not an experienced fan of his, though, you might want to keep a box of tissues handy when you watch this series. Just a fair warning.
