Feeling a little called out by the upcoming April 2023 anime, The Dangers In My Heart, and I’m not sure how to react to that. First announced back in August 2022, new details including cast, crew, and a teaser promotional video for the anime adaptation of the manga by Norio Sakurai were recently posted online. While the teaser video doesn’t reveal a ton about the story of this romantic comedy, I’m already curious if the light atmosphere of the video is going to be the tone for the whole series or if this initial peek is a fake out.
The Dangers In My Heart manga started its serialization in Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine in March 2018. In Japan, the series is up to seven volumes as of August 2022 while Seven Seas Entertainment is publishing it in English with the fifth volume being released in December 2022. The story follows two main characters; a young man named Kyotaro Ichikawa (played by Shun Horie) and Anna Yamada (played by Hina Yomiya). For more details about the story, Seven Seas Entertainment summarizes it as:
Kyotaro Ichikawa, a boy barely clinging to the bottom rung of his school’s social ladder, secretly believes he’s the tortured lead in some psychological thriller. He spends his days dreaming up ways to disrupt his classmates’ peaceful lives and pining after Anna Yamada, the class idol. But Kyotaro’s not nearly the troubled teen he pretends to be…and it turns out Anna’s a bit odd herself!
Already announced for a simulcast on HIDIVE, The Dangers In My Heart will have animation produced by studio Shinei Animation with Hiroaki Akagi serving as the director. He’ll be working off scripts written by Jukki Hanada and character designs drawn by Masato Katsumata. Finally, Kensuke Ushio is composing the background music.
In the introduction, I mentioned I felt a little called out. As I said recently in another article, I was not a talented student and was not well-liked by those around me growing up, for reasons. While I don’t feel as though I was as potentially worse off as the main character, Kyotaro, I can still relate to the feeling of isolation and being disruptive to get any kind of attention. While I can’t say for certain that this is Kyotaro’s motivation, the story summary tells me that this is a series that is likely worth my time when it premieres in the spring.
