Studio Trigger has released a teaser for SSSS.DYNAZENON, another anime project with Tsuburaya Productions that follows up the 2018 hit SSSS.GRIDMAN and takes place in the “Gridman Universe.” The teaser trailer mainly features a montage of scenes from SSSS.GRIDMAN, with a quick look at what is presumably the titular hero at the end.
According to the official site, the main staff for the production remains the same as the one from SSSS.GRIDMAN. SSSS.DYNAZENON will be a cross production between Tsuburaya Productions and Studio Trigger, with Akira Amemiya as director and Keiichi Hasegawa as screenwriter. Credits also include Masaru Sakamoto as character designer and Shiro Sagisu as music composer.
SSSS.GRIDMAN is based on the original tokusatsu show Gridman, which is a part of the Ultra Series — the series that features Ultraman, one of Japan’s most iconic superheroes. SSSS.GRIDMAN is an original story that follows Yuta Hibiki, an amnesiac young boy who meets the Hyper Agent Gridman within an old computer. As giant kaiju start appearing in the city, Yuta and Gridman fuse to grow to giant size to fight them. However, people who get caught in the kaiju attacks start being forgotten in the city’s collective memory, Yuta and his friends form the “Gridman Alliance” to defend the city against kaiju and uncover the mystery of Yuta’s amnesia.
As of now, it is unknown whether this will be a sequel to SSSS.GRIDMAN or a spinoff of some kind. However, the title of the show might hold a clue as to what the show will revolve around. In the original Gridman tokusatsu show, Dyna Dragon and Zenon were two different mechas piloted by Gridman. Zenon was represented in SSSS.GRIDMAN as Powered Zenon, the form that Gridman’s supporters/auxiliary weapons, the Neon Genesis Junior High School members, take when they fuse together. As there seem to be dragon-like motifs in the design for the teaser trailer character, perhaps Dynazenon will be another new ally for Gridman or maybe a new character based on the original Dyna Dragon.
SSSS.GRIDMAN was one of the most well received anime in 2018 due to its unique premise, well-written characters, and references to the original source material. It also helps that it featured plenty of eye candy, thanks to the purposeful focus on the thighs of leading ladies Rikka Takarada and Akane Shinjo.
No release date has been announced for SSSS.DYNAZENON. A Gridman panel with a talk from director Amemiya has been scheduled for December 15th, where perhaps more information will be given.
