CITY The Animation Is the First New Kyoto Animation Project in Six Years
Kyoto Animation is the amazing anime studio that brought us such titles as K-On!, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions. Their anime works make us swell up with pride as members of a globally-connected online otaku nation (Lucky Star), and force us to think about anime in ways we’ve never thought before (Haruhi). Best of all, Kyoani’s works are able to touch fans in ways no other studio can. We all remember bawling our eyes out while watching Clannad or Violet Evergarden.
And now the first totally new anime from Kyoani since 2019 is here, and it’s CITY The Animation, based on the manga by Nichijou creator Keiichi Arawi.

The Story of CITY The Animation
The story is set in a town known as CITY, where many strange things happen on a daily basis. We follow several characters as they move from bizarre situation to bizarre situation. The main trio are Wako Izumi, an airheaded university student who’s a master at photography; Ayumu Niikura, who wants to learn photography from Wako; and Midori Nagumo, an energetic tomboy who gets a job at Makabe’s Western Bistro.
There are plenty of side characters, too. Tatewaku Makabe, who is often the butt of visual jokes. His younger sister, Matsuri, and her friend Ecchan. The ditzy Riko Izumi, younger sister to Wako, who causes Tatewaku to fall in love with her. A manga artist representing the creator of the series. And more!
It Carries the DNA of Nichijou in Its Heart
14 years ago, Kyoani’s Nichijou arrived on the scene and immediately caught the attention of fans. Everyone has their favorite scene from the show — the principal vs. the deer battle, or Yuuko’s slow-motion attempt to catch that sausage with her chopsticks. Now we’ve all got another chance to discover new moments to tickle our funny bones.
As Expected, CITY The Animation Is Visually Gorgeous
Even though fans are showing up for the over-the-top gags, Kyoani isn’t lying down on the job. Every shot in the anime so far has been visually impressive, with each taking the time to add to the amazing world the characters inhabit. And the city the characters live in is amazing: as full of detail and character as the world of The Simpsons.
The Chaotic Gags Never Stop
As with Nichijou, the jokes are a lot of fun… although since humor is always subjective, you never know which ones will stand out to you. Make sure to give the new series a few episodes before forming an opinion!
The OP Is a Real Banger
The music by Furui Riho is great, giving us a great soundtrack as we first take in the beautiful world of CITY. It would be great to visit such a relaxing place!
There’s a CITY The Animation poster in the current issue of Megami Magazine. Read details here!
What’s Old Is New Again
Isn’t it great how anime never ends, but always comes back to us in some new form if we’re patient? No matter what the anime in question is, if you wait long enough, you’ll get to watch it again, possibly in a new form.
It’s Not Nichijou. And That’s Okay.
Although the show shares much of its DNA with Nichijou, it’s a totally new story, with new characters and bizarre new joke setups. So make sure your expectations are adjusted properly!
