Released earlier this month, Comic Walker has released a spinoff manga for The Rising of the Shield Hero focused on cooking. Appropriately titled The Menu of the Shield Hero (盾の勇者のおしながき), the first issue focuses on Naofumi teaching Raphtalia to be more confident in her fighting skills by helping her to hunt for their dinner. Thank goodness Naofumi’s found them a weak monster to target.
Luckily Raphtalia manages to dispatch the bunny monster and our heroes get a meal out the deal. Plus, a nice soup to go along with the roast bunny monster. It’s a shame there aren’t any recipes included along with the manga, as artist Amamichi Akano manages to make the food look very appetizing. Though the chapters of the spinoff seem to be set in between the major chapters of The Rising of the Shield Hero, I suppose it can be read without fear of major spoilers, at least for now.
The next chapter of Menu of the Shield Hero will be released on September 21st. I wonder which character will be cooking next, and what delicious delights readers will be getting a look at?
It’s always interesting to see how many Japanese manga, anime, and video games involve food in some capacity. Studio Ghibli is the grandfather of animating food that you can almost taste. The Cooking Mama series managed to be a sensational set of cooking games that were easy to emulate at home and included recipes in later installments, and there are several anime involving food as a major theme from snacks in Dagashi Kashi, cooking schools in Food Wars!, and even fighting for combini bento in Ben-To. Luckily for fans, there are plenty of people finding ways to recreate their favorite dishes in real life!
