Square Enix is having a pretty busy year so far. The developer has just put out what is arguably the most anticipated game of the year, Final Fantasy VII Remake. On top of that, they’re set to release a full 3D remake of acclaimed SNES classic Trials of Mana this month on multiple consoles. This bevy of Square Enix JRPG goodness is being topped off by their current plans for the 10th anniversary of the original NieR release, which is being celebrated by the development of two brand new games in the series. The first is a full remake of the first game, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, which will give overseas fans their first glimpse into this version of the story. The second project is a smartphone game for Android and iOS titled NieR Re[in]carnation, and a new trailer gives us our first look at the mobile game in action.
Rather than showing off match-3 puzzle action or grindy, turn-based RPG battles, our first look at the gameplay of NieR Re[in]carnation seems to show an atmospheric, environment-exploration focused game. With how brief the trailer is, though, this is likely only a small portion of what we can expect from the full game. The game is set to be free to play, with optional in-game purchases available as well. Square Enix is producing the title, while the developer is Applibot and character designs are being handled by CyDesignation.
As for NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, Square Enix describes the remaster as follows:
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… invites players into a dark, apocalyptic world as they join a brother’s captivating quest to cure his sister of a deadly disease — a quest which will in turn make them question everything.
Developed in collaboration with Toylogic, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… brings together an all-star team including acclaimed director Yoko Taro (Drakengard, NieR:Automata), composer Keiichi Okabe (TEKKEN, Drakengard, NieR:Automata), and producer Yosuke Saito (DRAGON QUEST X, NieR:Automata).
