Alright… I get it. Not everyone is wild about how Netflix handles anime. Every so often, however, they reveal something kind of neat that is worth at least looking at, such as their upcoming adaptation of the short-lived manga series Romantic Killer.
Based on the manga created by Wataru Momose, Romantic Killer tells the story of a high school girl named Kyoko Hoshino (played by Rie Takahashi) who has decided that she never wants to fall in love. One day, though, a wizard (played by Mikako Komatsu) appears who seems to be on a mission to make Kyoko fall in love, for some unknown reason.
Studio DOMERICA will handle the animation with Kazuya Ichikawa serving as the director. The series composition will be written by Sayuri Ohba, while the actual script will be tag-teamed by Ohba and Yuko Fukuda. Character designs will be drawn by Arisa Matsuura and finally, the background music will be composed by Ryu Kawasaki and Tomoyuki Kono. The series will premiere on Netflix worldwide on October 27th, 2022.
Here’s what’s interesting about this anime; you might recall in the introduction the careful use of the phrase “short-lived” when describing the original manga that this anime is based on. Debuting in July 2019 on the Shonen Jump+ website, Romantic Killer ran for less than a year before ending in June 2020. In total, the series only ran for four volumes and was only licensed for an English release in early 2022 (the first volume hits shelves in October 2022).
With only four volumes of material to work with, I’m curious to know how many episodes this adaptation is going to run. If it’s too long, the staff will have to come up with enough filler to get to the end. If, however, the team keeps this compact and bite-sized, it could make for a fun series that you can binge in one afternoon. As always with Netflix though, it’s probably a good idea to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
