If you’ve never seen an anime worked on by the immensely talented Mari Okada, you are in for a real treat!
On Monday, June 28th, a new promotional video hit the internet revealing that Mari Okada will be directing a new anime movie produced by studio MAPPA titled Alice and Therese’s Illusory Factory (Japanese title: Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō). Unfortunately for all of us though, all MAPPA was willing to release at the time was a promotional video, crew listing, and a vague “synopsis” which states that the movie will be a story about first love and fighting fate. I know that’s not a lot to go on, but at least check out this promotional video.
As for the previously mentioned crew members, Okada is reassembling the team from her previous movie, Maquia – When the Promised Flower Blooms, in order to create this work. This includes Tadashi Hiramatsu as the assistant director, Yuriko Ishii providing the character designs, and Kazuki Higashiji as art director. Meanwhile, Masaru Yokoyama will compose the background music.
As stated in my introduction, Mari Okada is one of the most talented writers working in the anime industry today. She’s survived over 20 years in the industry after being told in high school that she’d never survive in the real world. Over the course of two decades, she’s done more than survive in a harsh industry. She has absolutely thrived, having penned the scripts for hit series after hit series.
Okada is genuine living proof that any single one of us can make something of ourselves if we just apply ourselves and pursue our dreams with reckless abandon. An inspiration to millions around the world, always remember that even she was once cast aside and thought of as a failure before she went on to win multiple awards around the world.
