I discovered the Made in Abyss anime a bit late, but once I watched it all the way through, I knew that I wanted to see more. Now, thanks to an announcement made earlier this month, I will get that chance!
In a new video posted to the Kadokawa YouTube channel, it was revealed that the franchise will get a new anime. Unfortunately, the announcement does not specify what type of new anime fans would get nor does it specify when exactly we would see it, but at least we know it’s coming!
The new promotional video lasts for two minutes and very briefly recaps each entry in the anime series thus far, before announcing the new sequel at the very end.
Based on the Made in Abyss manga series, created by Akihito Tsukushi, the television series aired in the summer of 2017. In the series, a young girl named Riko goes on an adventure and travels deep into the pit known as the Abyss which houses rare artifacts from a long-dead civilization. The further one goes into the Abyss, however, the more likely one is to suffer from a potentially fatal illness upon returning to the surface. The series features animation produced by studio Kinema Citrus. It was directed by Masayuki Kojima and written by Hideyuki Kurata.
The series is licensed in the west by Sentai Filmworks, who describes the series as:
No one knows what’s at the bottom of the Abyss. No one who’s ventured that far has ever returned. What is known is that the Abyss is filled with strange creatures and priceless relics that have lured generations of fortune hunters into a diabolical trap. Because while anyone can descend into the Abyss safely, coming back up triggers a nightmarish series of transformations and madness. And the deeper you go, the less chance you have of coming back unchanged. But when 12-year-old Riko receives a message that her missing mother might still be alive deep in the Abyss, she knows she has to go to her.
