For the most part, this past weekend was a quiet one in terms of anime news with nothing much happening… I mean, except for a brand new Macross Frontier theatrical short being announced.
During the “Air Macross F Live 2021 ~ Mada Mada Futari wa Kore kara! Watashi-tachi no Uta o Kike!! ~” live stream hosted by singers May’n (Sheryl Nome) and Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee), it was revealed that the series would get a brand new theatrical short (no word on how “short” it will be) which will be titled Macross Frontier Film Short: Labyrinth of Time (Gekjōban Tanpen Macross Frontier ~Toki no Meikyū). It will launch later this year with the Gekijōban Macross Delta: Zettai LIVE!!!!!! movie.
While there was no promotional video with the announcement, the hosts did reveal a key visual (seen above) which contains the tagline “Can you hear these voices?” In terms of the staff bringing this short to life, the animation will be produced by studio Satelight (who produced the original Macross Frontier television anime) with Shoji Kawamori serving as director, writer, and storyboarder.
Serving as a single chapter in the much larger Macross universe, Macross Frontier first aired from April to September 2008. A recap movie titled Macross Frontier the Movie: The False Songstress was released in November 2009. A sequel movie titled Macross Frontier the Movie: The Wings of Goodbye was released a couple of years later in February 2011.
Due to the entire Macross franchise being unavailable in the United States (which seemingly will not change at any point in the foreseeable future), I’ve never actually watched anything from this franchise before. One of these days I’m going to break down and watch it all, but when that will be is anyone’s guess. That said, I do realize how big of a deal this is for fans of the franchise, which is why I have zero problems being excited on your behalf!
