After months of anticipation rife with teaser pictures and trailers the official site for the live-action adaptation confirmed that Hiromu Arakawa’s manga Fullmetal Alchemist will be releasing in Japanese theaters on December 1st of this year.

The website posted a clear photo of the Alphonse Elric, the younger Elric brother in the series, has been made with CG for the film, but the voice cast has yet to be revealed at this time. (Rie Kugimiya was the previous voice for Alphonse in the anime series, she’s also the voice of Kagura from Gintama, Happy from Fairy Tail, and Aisaka Taiga from Toradora!)
It’s also worth noting that the CG to create Alphonse is using some brand new techniques never before used in Japanese film history!
Tickets will be selling at a “First Day” discount price of 1,100 yen on the first of the month compared to the normal ticket price of 1,800 ($16 USD) yen. The official Twitter of the film stated that they decided on this day to give as many fans of the anime/manga a chance to watch it as possible.
The trailer was released back in November 2016 and you can watch it below!
While the film will be taking a few creative liberties (Edward Elric being around 20 years old rather than 15 like at the start of the series, for example) the character casting and cultural background choices seem well-thought out and personally I can’t wait for its release.
The full cast includes:
- Ryosuke Yamada as Edward Elric
- Tsubasa Honda as Winry Rockbell
- Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang
- Fumiyo Kohinata as General Hakuro
- Ryuta Sato as Maes Hughes
- Misako Renbutsu as Riza Hawkeye

Fullmetal Alchemist synopsis:
Edward Elric, a young, brilliant alchemist, has lost much in his twelve-year life: when he and his brother Alphonse try to resurrect their dead mother through the forbidden act of human transmutation, Edward loses his brother as well as two of his limbs. With his supreme alchemy skills, Edward binds Alphonse’s soul to a large suit of armor.
A year later, Edward, now promoted to the fullmetal alchemist of the state, embarks on a journey with his younger brother to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone. The fabled mythical object is rumored to be capable of amplifying an alchemist’s abilities by leaps and bounds, thus allowing them to override the fundamental law of alchemy: to gain something, an alchemist must sacrifice something of equal value. Edward hopes to draw into the military’s resources to find the fabled stone and restore his and Alphonse’s bodies to normal. However, the Elric brothers soon discover that there is more to the legendary stone than meets the eye, as they are led to the epicenter of a far darker battle than they could have ever imagined.
