Despite being a card-carrying dog lover, I really enjoyed the 2019 anime series My Roommate is a Cat. I loved it so much in fact that after it was done airing, I went in search of the original manga, only to be disappointed to learn that it wasn’t available in English yet. It seems that sometimes, though, you just have to be patient.
On September 14th, it was announced that the manga series My Roommate is a Cat (Dōkyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. or “My Housemate is on My Lap, But Sometimes on My Head”) had been licensed by Lezhin Comics who have made the first chapter available to read for free. They describe the story as follows:
The story follows mystery author and recluse Subaru Mikazuki as he meets and adopts a stray cat, Haru, after visiting his parents’ memorial. Subaru has completely withdrawn from society after the tragic death of his parents, but slowly begins to open to the outside world. If only to make the occasional purchase of cat food for Haru.
Written by Minatsuki and illustrated by Asu Futatsuya, the series began serialization on Comic Polaris in June 2015 and has been collected in six volumes in Japan. Studio Zero-G produced the previously mentioned anime adaptation which aired in the winter 2019 season.
This is an adorable series and anyone who owns a cat should go out of their way to pick it up. Most of the time, My Roommate is a Cat will stick with the comedic antics of the first time cat owner but sometimes you have to be ready to be punched right in the feels by this series which likes to strike out of nowhere. Equal parts sweet and charming, Haru proves that you don’t have to be human to be ‘best girl’.
