Kyoto Animation Releases Two New Commercials

Because if there’s any studio that needs commercials to show off what they can do, it’s Kyoto Animation.

This past Thursday, July 8th, the much-loved studio Kyoto Animation revealed two 30-second commercials titled Imagination and Meiji Edition (or Vision). As with other commercials that have been released over the years, these ads are not exactly promises of what’s coming from the studio but, also like previous commercials, there’s always a chance that we’re seeing hints at the future, such as when Kyoto Animation released the commercial featuring happy young men frolicking around a pool, which turned out to be the anime Free!

Imagination

In the first commercial, we see a young man and a young woman with larger-than-life imaginations in their youth, until a chance encounter at school brings them together.

Meiji Edition / Vision

In the second commercial, the setting is the Meiji era of Japan and a young girl is traveling into the city. When she gets there, she meets up with a young boy and the pair opens a box that shows them an amazing future.

Two different creative staff put together these commercials, with the first one being directed by Haruki Sakamoto with Tamami Tokuyama serving as character designer and animation director. The background music was composed by Tsubasa Ito. The second commercial had Tatsuya Ishihara as the director with Aya Hikita as character designer and animation director, and finally Ginnojo Hoshi as the background music composer.

I joked in my introduction about how Kyoto Animation is one of the few studios that doesn’t really need to put out commercials showing off what they can do. If you’re a regular anime fan, you know what they can do and their almost flawless track record as the primary animation producer for television series and movies has been well documented by many, many people already.

Still, it’s always fun to see a popular studio put out these little shorts just to remind people they are indeed looking towards the future and have new ideas in mind.
