The Kaiju Hunter Becomes a Kaiju
Kaiju No. 8 is set in a world where kaiju walk the earth and threaten humanity. The Defense Force was formed to protect people and slay these dangerous monsters. Kafka Hibino (Masaya Fukunishi) and Mina Ashiro (Asami Seto) are childhood friends who promise to rise through the ranks to eliminate kaiju and protect their homes when they grow up. Things evidently don’t quite work out that way.
Mina has indeed become an ace kaiju slayer. She became the captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force at the age of 27. Following Kafka’s failed tests, he was consequently reduced to cleanup duty. He’s one of the guys who clean up the dead kaiju after people like Mina take them down. Mina is less than impressed with him because of his new job. Despite this setback and disappointment, Kafka has not given up on his dreams of standing beside Mina. However, another setback arrives in the form of a tiny kaiju who flies into Kafka’s mouth, turning him into a powerful kaiju. He is afterward designated Kaiju No. 8, and the Defense Force would like to speak with him.
