Japanese High School will Suspend Their Students if They Don’t Reveal Their Social Media Account Names

Classroom

Social Media has become an avenue for all of us to express our opinions, views, art, and so on. Whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, these help us interact with people who share the same interests as you and widen your connections online. It’s also a common thing that people have a personal account for the professional and school reasons, as well as another account for them to go all out sharing memes and comments on various topics.

Now, what happens if your school asks for detailed info about your social media accounts especially your usernames? That would be very awkward.

Classroom 2

A Japanese Twitter user @asanansonsi is currently on her second year of high school and recently shared that their school recently passed out a form to students in relation to their social media use. The form only had basic questions like what social media platforms that they use (Facebook, Twitter, LINE, etc.) and how many “friends” that they have on each platform.

Although everything seems okay on the surface, she expressed that the second question on the said form made her a bit uncomfortable. She shared:

“This is for those of you who answered ‘Yes’ in regards to using social media. In order to prevent trouble caused via social media, this school performs Internet patrols. To prevent any trouble, please write down the ID you use for each of your social media accounts.”

Classroom 3

To many, this kind of surveillance to students is just way over the line for a few reasons: it does not respect the privacy of the students, it hinders their freedom of speech and expression, and lastly it makes them vulnerable for bullying or getting reprimanded on the smallest of things as old posts of the previous years may be seen for the school administration. For any bad comment you say online, you might get suspended or worse kicked out depending on the post.

For @asanansonsi however, she was able to find a way to avoid her school administration to snoop on her posts as she made her accounts, especially her Twitter, private and inaccessible to anyone.
